Little thing inside Air Cleaner ?

What's the little thing inside the 1970-71 air cleaners that the flap door vacuum doors hooks to ?

Is it a serviceable part ? Anybody got an aftermarket part number ?

Some sort of temperature switch.  The air cleaner door should only be open when the engine is up to temperature.  When cold, the door should be closed so the engine is drawing in air from around the exhaust manifold.

The air cleaner door is open by default.  When cold, the vacuum canister closes the door and blocks off the air coming from the snorkel.  When the engine warms up, that temperature switch must close which takes away the vacuum signal to the canister. 

An easy fix if you have a vacuum leak at that switch would just be installing a check ball in the vacuum line before the switch.  You could have everything hooked up so it looks stock.  Most people don't drive these cars in cold weather anyway so it would be a big deal.

That switch was used in a lot of years.  My 73 has one too.

   a type of emissions control using pre-heated air to feed the carb when engine was cold and carb was choked.  I remember when my car was brand new it drove like crap when cold.  It would spit up through the carb hesitate and run like poo until heated up.  The dealership never got it right back then.

That is:  thermal vacuum switch is part of the Thermostatically Controlled Air Cleaner (TAC) System. It controls a trap door in the air cleaner snorkel which routes heated air from the exhaust manifold heat stove into the air cleaner, depending on the air temperature. This provides faster warmup and better cold engine driveability. The switch is designed to maintain 105 deg intake air temp for stable air fuel mixture control on fixed-jet carburetors back in the day. I'm not sure if this part is still available, but I'll check. It used to be a dealer item.

In a conversation about this same gizmo over on forfmjbodiesonly.com,  I was told that it is a temperature controlled vacuum control gizmo....intake vacuum feeds one side, then a hose goes to the falpper door on the snorkle on original air cleaner housings.

The flapper on our 80 Volare slan6 6 wasnt working so I was looking into this.

APparantly, according to the person there, who is pretty knowledgable from what I can see,  says this temp sesnor only works when its like +15 degrees F......so I pretty much quick worrying about it since that is a very very small part of the weather in my area.  My son drive the car this winter and muddled through OK even with the flapper not flapping. LOL

It would be nice to get everythin gworking "correctly" but I wasnt able to find a replacement for either the sesnor OR the flapper motor...so.....just have to let it warm up longer when cold.
