Rear Springs
« on: April 12, 2017 - 03:44:27 PM »
I added a leaf to the Mopar XHD springs hoping to get a slightly higher ride height such that the top of the tire (275/40/17) is at the wheel arch. I have the jack stands on the axle now with no engine and trans yet, fuel tank is empty. I now have about 1.5" clear at the top of the tire. I think it should reduce some with gas , engine and tranny. however, I see that the leaf springs are touching the lower back valence. I think it is going to damage it when driving the car with the suspension travel. Anyone seen this problem before and what did you do to correct this. I don't want to cut the painted valence if I don't have to.

Is it the leaf you added that's going to hit the valance?  You can trim the end of that leaf if you need to.  Can you post a picture?

The first thing I'd do is trim the spring.  Someone else had this problem too.  His was actually worse then yours.  The consensus was to trim the spring.

LOL
That might have been me. :eek4:

My springs are A body Super Stock ones without the rear clamp but mine are not near as close to the rear valance as the OP's
when sitting and never have rubbed the rear valance during normal driving. Mine did this during a fairly hard (440 4 speed) launch that caused the SS springs to open up then shift back when I backed off.

I haven't got around to trimming the springs yet but I did add a clamp at the very rear and it hasn't done it again...yet.

In your last picture it appears that the rear shackle is angled forward. The Ideal position would be angled to the rear or straight up and down. When you add the weight of the engine and trans it may flatten the spring and give more clearance.

Looks like I have to pull the valence off again, loosen the hanger bolts and wait until I put engine trans and gas back in to see how it all behaves. I suppose last resort is to bring out the cutting wheel.

The added leaf created the interference. Without it, the interfering leaf would have tucked  up over the valance.

Added weight will push the shackle back some, which will pull the pack up slightly, but not a lot. In your position, I'd try pull the valance down a bit. The spring right there will move rearward during suspension movement and will continue to rub/hit the valance.

IMO, it looks like the valence is tucked up/in too far. I have 5 1/4" between the frame and valence and at least an inch to my leafs. Have no idea how that distance is adjusted though.

I did not have problem before I add the extra leaf. Axle on jack stands so weight of car is on the spring but no engine, Trans and empty tank. I will just wait until everything goes back on the car and deal with this last. Right now all gaps line up good and corners to quarters are align.
