1970 Cuda Fuel Filler Neck
« on: April 12, 2017 - 12:30:35 AM »
Guys, I want your opinions. I have a 70 Cuda with an original fuel filler neck (the 70 Cuda only with the indent in the neck in the trunk) that I have replaced more or less the whole fuel system, short of the fuel filler neck. I'd like to either replace it or get it refinished so as to not contaminate the new system with whatever has grown (rusted) in the 5 years or so that I have had the car apart. From what I can see, nobody makes the 70 specific neck, and instead just makes the 71-74 style without the indent. My car also came equipped with ECS, though it now has a Tanks Inc FI tank and traditional tank vent. I'm not sure if ECS cars have a different fuel filler neck or not, though ECS details seem to be scarce.

Would you keep the 70 fuel neck and just get it refinished? There's a guy who gets great reviews on another Mopar site. He advertises his services on his website now http://www.n96airgrabber.com/fillertube.htm
Secondary concern would be finding a new locking gas cap. The current one on the car fits in the tube, but doesn't seal all too well due to not fitting snug against the neck like a modern car - should it?
Finally, probably a silly question, but does the indent in the filler neck make filling up the tank take longer? When the car was running and put together, fill ups at the gas station always took forever as it seemed like the fuel coming out of the pump came out faster than the fuel could feed into the tank. This might have been an issue with the tank vent (if it even was hooked up correctly at that point).

Well answered my own question. Figured I might as well respond to it in case anyone has a similar question in the future. OER ME8150 is the part number for the reproduction fuel filler neck for a 1970-1974 Barracuda. It DOES have the indent on the neck, and calls for use of a Stant ST10491 locking gas cap (listed for model years 1970-1971 Barracuda). Whether the indent is specific to 1970 only Barracudas I have not been able to confirm or deny. Going to car shows, I have seen 70s with the indent, some 71s, and I think mid year 71 and later have been smooth, but its been almost a year since I've seen another E Body (Mopar Alley).

Wilson Productions (http://www.n96airgrabber.com/fillertube.htm) quoted me ~$115 for the service and shipping, in case anyone was interested. Its cheaper to just buy the $50 repro and a new gas cap at roughly ~$60 + shipping.

I'm still not sure how snug the gas cap is supposed to feel against the fuel filler neck, but I guess I will find out soon once I install the new parts.
