registering old car

I live in NJ and wondering how much do you pay for the tax on the car. What I mean is we know what a classic car goes for or pay but the tax on what we say we paid on nthis classic car when it comes time to register . Thanks

When I bought my car they didn't care how much I payed for it, they taxed me on kelly blue book. They have gotten smart and tax you on what they are worth. Fyi 70 Challenger convertible they assessed for 25k. That was 4 years ago

I always tell them I paid $500. Only got questioned once and had the seller sign a paper saying that's what I paid. Why should they be allowed to tax the same vehicle over and over!!!!

How would they know the condition of that? It could be a basket case needing major work.

In California, they tax you on what you paid for it.  I always give the buyer do two bill's of sell. one for the price paid and an other one on an agreed upon price they want to show the DMV.

But, be aware, the DMV has done stings and also watch swap meets to see what cars are actually selling for. The state likes their tax monies.

Does your state have any offsite place to register vehicles like AAA or Tag businesses?

In Iowa, you are taxed on the purchase price.  When we transferred the title from my dad's name to my name on the Challenger, the DMV processed it as a "gift".  No taxes at all.

No transfer of ownership, AL didn't have titles back then, but just to get a tag after over 2-decades I had to prove I had owned the car.
Was able to find old insurance statements with VIN on it which was sufficient to get a Lifetime Antique Tag... cost less than $50.
  I actually registered a '73 tag I had held onto that's allowed to be on the car rather than the Antique Tag which I will keep in the car.

Also if they send you paper work you can show pictures and also reciepts of what you put into the vehicle to show why the price was lo on a newer vehicle. I don't know on a classic car how it works

Every state is different, in Mass they like to tax the sh*t out of you. The DMV will only look at a bill of sale only if it comes from a mass dealer. If out of state, they go by kelly blue book.

Every article I read about any cost of living topic always seems to say the same thing; the taxes in New Jersey are the most expensive anywhere in the nation. Across the board.

That's crazy that they do the blue book thing...it should be based on what you pay, not what someone "might" pay. With that logic, why stop there? When you file your income taxes, they should say you're working for too little and tax you based on a higher income whether you actually get paid that or not.

When you think about it, all DMVs in all states should charge an appropriate fee every year for road maintenance, highway patrol, and other associated costs, regardless of what you choose to drive. Too many states are allowed to use it as a cash cow since they know we can't get around it. Heck, I don't pay sales tax when I buy a used lawnmower at a garage sale so why should they get to tax the same car again and again.

You folks in New Jersey need to start voting those people out of office who create sketchy laws like that to steal your money! I thought California was bad but it seems pretty fair and reasonable by comparison.
