New headers
« on: February 26, 2017 - 05:54:51 PM »
Had to pull the heads this winter for new head gaskets and decided it was time to replace the old Summit house brand (what ever brand they may be) 1 3/4" primary tube that needed to be dented in 3 or 4 places to fit. They had cracked the primary tubes in the first turndown many times and they just wouldn't stay sealed, cracking beside the welded up cracks, so I sprung for a set of Doug's 2" primary ceramic coated. I have never installed a set of headers that fit so well and were so easy to install, cleared everything!! Well, the Kerker header on my Z1R KZ-1000 was easier I guess.

So I say "thanks" Doug's for a great fitting header!
PS: Doug's is the same guy that started Duog Thorley Headers.
PSS: put these on a 73 Challenger with a 440, stock iron heads, power steering, automatic, slapstick console shifter, mini starter off a 318 Dakota

How much ground clearance do these headers have?
How much clearance do you have to the pitman arm? Trying to determine it they would work with fast ratio.

Ground clearance is so hard to say, depends on your suspension height and tire size, but mine is close to stock height with 14" wheels and 215-75 tires. They've got about 3.75" on the right side at the collector where the 4 tubes come together and 4.5" on the left in the same spot. I doubt they would work with quick ratio arms (their instructions say they won't without mods), on the left side the grease zerk on top of pitman arm is VERY close on top, seams to maybe have room toward the back and might clear if the pitman arm doesn't raise any more than a normal arm. The right drag link has plenty of room on top but as soon as it gets longer I'm afraid you'd run into problems. All this said I don't know for sure as I've never been around the fast ratio arms.

And an update after a couple hundred miles, they seal great!, no clicks or clattering, don't even hear the "tinny" thin header sound, been a long time since I've had the cast manifolds on, but if I remember right these sound a lot like them. Now that I've got it on the floor it has 3.5" clearance on the passenger side and 4" on the driver's side. Haven't drug them yet, even on my driveway or the dips around town.
