It's the bulkhead connector area that is problematic.  Where the black wire from alternator power enters and red wire where it continues out to the starter relay.  Many times this area is melted badly from heat/resistance.
The way Rob described it is the way to go. That's the way I did the conversion with one other difference. Instead of leaving the original black output wire from the alt to the bulkhead in place I rerouted it and connected it with red wire at the starter relay(used a fusible link here as well). Then disconnected the ammeter, bolted the red and black together and taped. This gives you parallel feeds to the interior through the bulkhead further reducing the probability of a bulkhead meltdown.
When you do this job to reduce your chance of electrical problems, do yourself a favour and check/inspect the ignition switch column connector. It's the connector with the large gauge wires in it. Make sure they are clean and tight. It is another common area for a bad connection heat meltdown.  :2cents:

Ok fellas, so we finally got some nice weather here in wpa, and I found a little time yesterday to pull the car out and see what I could find out. I attached a wire to the stud on the back of the alternator and ran it over to the positive on the solenoid, with the car running, I'm still getting a reading of 12.14 at the battery. I thought I would try checking the alternator, I'm getting 12.07 again car running, checking the stud and grounding to the alternator case. Thoughts? many thanks in advance!

Is the regulator sending a signal to energize the alternator?  Green wire.

Engine running, volt meter connected at the battery... Unplug the two wire connection at the voltage regulator, use a short length of wire to ground the green wire in the voltage regulator connector... If the voltage climbs the regulator is bad, if not further testing is needed,....

So... although I've been planning to use the Denso lightweight alterntr, can the factroy style altrntr be used as well, with the wiring alterations by-passing the alterntr gauge and bulkhead?... and use a volt gage?
