total rewire..which kit to use???

Ok so I scraped up enough money to do a bigger project on my car....I think Ill do a rewire since I have no idea what works and what doesn't on my car....I want to do a rewire and do away with the bulk head nightmare (almost lost my 68 charger thanks to the amp gauge issue)....I also plan on getting the Dakota gauge package to put in my rally gauge set up...which is why I was leaning more towards the "bare bones"....what has other people used as far as wiring the entire car??  was considering these.....

Also what are most people using for the one wire upgrade as far as alternators go...Ive heard 90's toyota and several different ones..thanks!

I went with the American autowire modern update kit it's a bit pricey but I'm my opinion completely worth it. It'll update to a single wire alternator it has connections for multiple restomod options, and great thorough instructions.

My chassis harness is about 75% Painless and the rest is of my own brew + the engine EFI harness. The car is quite custom however, if it's remotely stock, any of these will harnesses should do well out of the box.

The Painless stuff is pretty decent, do keep in mind how you are going to get through the firewall when you delete the bulkhead connector.

I got mine from Chris at Columbia Parts. Best price I could find by far.

I've been doing a little research on this myself. I was going to go with the american autowire kit and was all set to buy it until I figured out it won't support factory AC. What I liked about it is it makes you do the amp meter bypass and it was about as complete kit as you could find. Reviewing the instructions they were very detailed and it looked like if you followed their instructions that your average person could install it.. I have a call in to their tech group to see if they have a work around for factory ac. Their Mopar guy was on vacation but they said they would check with him when he got back. Cheapest place I found it was at summit for $719, free shipping. The M&H kit from Year one was about $530 for the under dash harness only and then you had to buy the other harnesses separate. Total for my 70 was going to be about a grand for everything I needed. I also looked at Painless and the C bus stuff but they weren't as user friendly and the Cbus stuff was very expensive.

I used the American Auto Wire kit bumper to bumper and really liked it! After 3 years in use my only change would be to use a better NAPA bulb socket for the tail lights. I had to replace both ...for alternator I used Tuff and have no complaints as it looks factory, but I got the powder coated black one.....

I'm with the other guys. I just bought the AAW upgrade kit. Have yet to install it but it has everything. It is a bit pricey but I'm doing a pro-touring build with my 72 and I've always been told good wiring is one of the best insurance policies you can buy.

They said their kit would not support factory A/C but would support vintage air, Don't know if it's because of the compressor or what. I'm going to call them again next week.

Berlasterb: I am very interested in what you find out. My '73 Challenger has factory a/c. Do the wire harnesses include taillight sockets? I could probably get by with just a rear wire harness. I just discovered today, previous owner had a trunk pan installed and the trunk wire harness has wires snipped  that don't go anywhere. When the brakes are applied rear driver side lights up only, when the headlights are on both tail lights light up. The hole in the trunk floor for the license plate wire with insulator was welded closed ...so no license plate light. LCD Digital Circuit tester indicates no volts to the passenger brake light. I tested the bulbs and only found the license plate buld bad. Gotta be the trunk wire harness.
