Shifter
« on: October 15, 2017 - 10:32:56 PM »
First mod I made when I got my car back in 2012 was to install the skip shift eliminator. It is still working great. Second mod a few months later was to change out the stock shifter with a Hurst shifter. That was the only option back then. I had to made additional mods that many other users had done in order to quiet down the rattle and eliminate the vibration after installation of the shifter. It worked and I had lots of fun after. Now 20k miles later, the rattle and noise from the Hurst shifter is back. At first I thought it was something else but could not find anything wrong after two times under the car. Exhaust pipe is tight and transmission mount seems ok. Then memory flash back and I realize it is from the shifter. I don't have the vibration that I first had but the rattle is back. Also the shifter seems not as precise as it once was. I recall that the Hurst shifter has a weak part internally and many users had seen it failed. I don't recall off hand what that was but suspect that it finally caught up to me. So instead of try to fix it, I pulled the trigger and order a Barton shifter. This thing is made in USA not like the Hurst which was made oversea. Looking forward for more wrenching when it arrive and I will post after the install. Also there are a lot of testimonies online as to how great the Barton is compare to the Hurst.

I'd love to hear how it works out for you. I have two pistol grip four speed cars. Not sure I could get rid of that cool pistol grip look though.

on the challenger talk forums everyone raves about a barton shifter. after test driving a scat pack a couple of weeks ago i have to say a shifter change would be needed if i went with a manual. a quick search found this: http://www.challengertalk.com/forums/f180/barton-shifter-best-343210/.

I did the install over the weekend. Like many had said, it is a much better made product than Hurst. I have the version 3. I did not have much driving time yet but 2-3 and 3-4 shift is very precise, just like what Barton advertise. For me, 2-3 shift is where Hurst failed. I did missed 1-2 shift twice, most likely need to get some time on it. I also adjusted it all the way to the right so might need to back off some. The handle can be adjusted left to right and fore and after to customize for the driver. The shifter came with the plastic white ball like Hurst. The stick is machined aluminum whereas the Hurst is chrome plated steel. The combo is just too light for my taste and the ball too small. My Mopar leather and weighted ball shift knob won't fit, hole too small for the Barton stick. I ordered the Barton SS ball shift knob that weight one pounds. It ships in two weeks and Then

 feel should get better.

Overall, the Barton seems less notchy than Hurst. Throw is about the same. BTW the noise lessen than from before but there is still noise, no vibration. I will be taking it apart after some miles and if the noise is still there. I want to listen to my exhaust, not mechanical noise.

My first mod on my 2016 was also the skip shift eliminator.  I also decided to swap shifters and went straight for the Barton Shifter in anodized black with Barton engraved in red on the stick plus a black ball shifter with the shifter pattern in red to match.  The thing looks and performs amazing.  I would definitely go with the Barton Shifter!!!

when I got my PCP 2010 RT (new), one of the first things I installed (and had to have) is a Mr. Norm's pistol grip handle with carbon fiber grips. It just replaced the stock handle and works awesome. I couldn't own a stick Challenger w/o the pistol grip; absolutely love it and the car. I have a skip shift eliminator through the Diablo Intune.
