5.7 Coolant refill question
« on: December 11, 2014 - 07:18:11 PM »
I am putting a 180 degree thermostat in my 2010 Challenger 5.7. When refilling the coolant is there anything special I need to do? Or is it just like filling the old style cooling systems? Thanks for any help.   Matt

Matt,

There is nothing magical, but the odd thing is refilling the radiator by the overflow reservoir. Note the color of your coolant. For instance, my 2013 has purple and should be good for 100,000 miles. Your's may be pink or some other color?

Just curious why your putting a 180 in. ?  Its engineered to run hotter due to the emmisions, cats and such. I installed one on a Street Rod with that motor when we put Edelbrock dual quads on, no cats, MSD to fire coils.

If just replacing thermostat, no.  If draining and refilling system, yes.  You need to remove the allen head plug on the water pump while filling the system.  When coolant comes out, install the plug and continue filling, otherwise you'll create an air lock.

Thanks for the input guys, yes I was just putting in the thermo so I filled it like normal.

Roadman, I read some posts on here that a 180  thermo will give up to 30 more HP. There is a noticeable difference for sure.

I have not noticed any mileage loss, but do tell.
