steering turns to the right
« on: August 15, 2017 - 06:49:38 PM »
Here's my problem.  70 chall 340, auto. Total rebuild, getting ready to move the car to test drive, I made it a few feet, no power steering, trans slipping.  Added trans fluid, when I added the power steering fluid the wheels turned fully right and was very difficult to turn to the left, the power steering pump was also over heated. I read in the mopar manual that the valve assemble should be loosened up and moved forward or back to eliminate any self steering.  Does that sound like the cure? or could it be something else?

That is absolutely the cure.... Get the front wheels in the air, slightly loosen the two bolts... Start the car, make sure you don have your hand through the spokes when you do, it can break your arm.... tap the valve fore or aft till the steering wheel centers itself....Tighten bolts...

One trick to know it's right, engine off center the steering wheel... Don't touch the wheel while starting the car, watch the wheel, when the engine first lights if the valve is correct the wheel won't budge.... If it's off it will "kick" slightly...

I learned that the hard way the first time I put Cuda together. Yep, stood outside the car with my hand through the wheel and started it up. Won't make that mistake again!!!
