72 Challenger Numbers Matching

Hi everyone. It has been a few years since I have been on this board but knew where to come for trusted advice. I have had a 72 Challenger in storage for quite sometime. It is a project car but mostly there. It is a 340 3 speed numbers matching black on black car with the rallye dash. I do have engine and transmission for it. The body is in really good shape and has only some surface rust. The previous owner has shown interest in getting it back from me. He is willing to trade a vehicle or possibly buy it back. My question is what do you think it is worth. Like I said, the body and everything is in really good shape and I have the original powertrain. What are your thoughts? Thanks.

Unfortunately, 72-74 cars don't bring anywhere near the money a 70 or 71 will bring.  It's good that the car is a 340 and that it's black.  Those two things are working for you.  Is the car a Rallye model?  In 72, the VIN will start with JS(not JH) if it's a Rallye.

It may be a few days before I can check 100% but I am very positive it is. I understand 72+ don't bring near the amount the others do. I'm just trying to get a rough idea on value. It is almost a complete car. Just missing interior, other than dash, and whatever ever parts I scavenged off of it for my 71.

IF I were looking for a '72+ Challenger and could get anything that was truly rust free, original & straight the value would be in my opinion much greater, say upward of 12K
However most everything I've ever seen was none of these things....Sooo even if it's above average & otherwise just as I perceive you describe I'm thinking you might expect to get maybe 4K.
Locally I was shown a picture of a roller with no interior or divetrain(and probably needing everything else) described as straight & solid, they were asking $2,500.
I would value a complete and driveable piece quite a bit higher as I could see what was missing and just how good or bad things are.
You did not mention if it's a Rallye(only that it has a Rallye dash) which might be worth something to someone wanting to do an OE restoration.

I think pricing the 72-74 cars is difficult.  You will definitely have more invested in them then they are worth.  That being said, it can cost you $25k at the body shop very easily if you need to replace panels.  That doesn't even include paint.  Even though people will say they aren't "worth" it, if you can buy a truly RUST FREE body that doesn't need any panel replacement, you are far better off to pay a higher price in the beginning.  $12k seems very high BUT if you are starting out rust free, you'll be saving a LOT of money in the overall build cost.

If the car needs some panel replacement, the value goes down FAST.

I worked for a dealership in 1996-2000, that was recognized as having one of the best body shops in NORCAL. We did a lot of full panel replacement on  American muscle cars. A customer brought in what appeared to be a nice 1969 RS/SS Camaro. He wanted the body media blasted. When the work was done there were large and small holes on both rear quarter panels caused by rust. I thought my eyes were deceiving me because the car came in with a great looking body. The customer paid $2,500.00 per quarter panel in labor only to have new quarter panels installed...and that didn't include the cost of the panels, paint or the media blasting. Remember that was back in 1998 .

I have close to $45k in my 73 now and it was a running car no body work required when I bought it few years back. Cost adds up really fast and I will never get it back. It does not bother me because I knew what I am getting into. I think an average condition72-74 car with decent paint goes for at least around $20k now and the prices had been going up. Rust free shell with clear title may be under $10k. All depends on how bad the guy wants it. Price drop really fast if body or frame rail work is required, might as well do it on a 70-71 IMO.

I stopped by to give the car a quick once over. It is a rallye 340 3 spd. It is a rust free car minus some minor surface rust, no panels or anything need replaced. Whole suspension etc is there. Some interior is missing but I do have the rallye dash, seats and some interior panels. I have the matching numbers engine and trans in my 71 but would have to take it out of the 71 for this deal. I appreciate everyone's feedback so far. Thanks
