8 speed and 440?
« on: January 28, 2018 - 09:20:07 AM »
Hey all, been a while since I've been around here.

I'm closer than ever to getting started on my dream Challenger build, should be able to buy the car in 6-12 months, depending on certain factors. I definitely plan on going overdrive automatic and at first I thought I'd go for an A-518 swap, but then I started wondering if it's at all possible to use one of the new 8HP70 or 8HP90 transmissions behind the old 440? The new Hemi motors hook up to small block bell housings, so I wonder if it's possible to use an Ultrabell big block bellhousing? Or is the one on the 8 speed different and something I'd have to fabricate myself? Obviously trans tunnel surgery would be required as well. Does anyone currently make a stand-alone TCM for the 8 speed? How would the drive line alignment work? I realize this is probably not a realistic goal but I'm curious to see if it's possible.

Another possible option is a TCI 6 speed auto kit, although I'm not too crazy about the Outlaw shifter that it comes with. Is it necessary to use that thing? Has anyone had positive/negative experiences with their 6 speed?

Thanks!

I think the controller is going to be the biggest challenge. There is no standalone TCM.

Without a way for the computer to shift the transmission and to know when to shift the transmission I don't believe and 8 speed Auto will work.
