'Cuda Grille Repair ??? Help me please..
« on: July 19, 2002 - 06:06:05 AM »
???    Does anyone know what I should use to fix my grille? and where I can get it.. There is so many products and I don't want to use something that looks bad or don't work. I have about a 3 inch crack at the very front center that goes to the edge and a small crack around the passengers side head light bezel. That is it. I am not missing any pieces so everyone tell me it can be fixed but then they do not tell me how!!
So if anyone has done this I could use your help on this one..Any help with be much appreciated..
Thanks

it would probably be best to take it to someone who specializes in plastic welding  ;)

I agree with Chryco Psyco, take it to someone who does plastic welding. DON'T waste your money on SEM's plastic repair epoxy. One of the Mopar mags (I think it was Mopar Muscle) did a story on grill repair a year or so back and used SEM's stuff. They claimed it worked great. 30 bucks later, I can definately say the stuff is crap! J-B Weld worked better!

I checked out Alltrim. Looks good, thanks for the info. I think I will send it there when it is time. I don't need it this year, and maybe the next. Moving slow but surely.

Thanks

I have used PlastiFix to successfully repair a few types of rigid plastics...  Consoles, etc.  It can be sanded after application, and is quite durable.

Worked excellent for me. But if you try it make sure you follow all the instructions to the letter... 8)  Clean, clean, clean before application... and beware of the fumes! ;D

And it does not work at all on flexible plastics like door panels, etc. ::)

The Eastwood Company offers a do-it-yourself plastic welder kit;  their website has more info. I think that SEM makes different epoxies for various grades of plastic;  for example,  if you take a piece of the plastic and it floats,  this type would take a different epoxy than one that sinks.(i read the directions but never tried it).

I called my local dealership and asked who they use to fix plastics. All the new cars are made of plastic. They are constantly being cracked and broken. The guy who did mine was so busy I had to wait months and nagged him to get him to do the repairs. In the end the repairs were great. He even fixed a small crack in my dash pad. I have real tough time finding it and I know where it is.

Thanks I will check into all of those things. First I will call the dealership. It is like 5 miles from my house so it is close. But I think they do there own they have got a huge body shop attached. I will check all your guys idea's out. At least I will have several options to choose from. That was what I was hoping for. Thanks

I hear All Trim is top notch. Shipping and brokerage from Canada plus our weak dollar makes is too expensive to send to the US.

Why don't you try the 2-part epoxy called "PC-7"?  It mixes easily, doesn't make deadly fumes, and only costs a few bucks.  You can usually find it in any hardware store or autoparts store.  Just follow the directions, and "open up" the crack in the grille to give the PC-7 a larger surface to adhere to.  I have used this stuff on my 1971 'cuda grille that had about 4 or 5 different cracks.  I have also used it on steering wheels and other hard plastic parts.  It worked great, cured within 1 day, and was easy to mould into shape and then sand to a smooth finish.  Good luck.
