67 440 4-BBL with 915 Heads. Which Cam and other?
« on: February 24, 2018 - 12:43:47 PM »
I have a 70 Challenger project that is close to completion.   The car runs and seems to produce okay performance but not great.   From my past experience it should be better.   No smoke issues and idles fine.

It is a '67 Stock 440 HP block, OEM pistons but with 915 heads added, that I believe were cleaned up, but not modified.   I am using a new Edelbrock Street Performer double pumper 750.

Cam is questionable, so I am planning to replace/improve the top end of the motor by installing a new cam (mild).  Which one is the most desirable and reliable for street use these days??  Mopar Performance Purple was my first choice, but from reading threads may be older technology (as per Chryco).  Advise needed ......  which make/model??

Should I have the heads re-worked with different size valves, springs, ported, etc or just replace with Stainless and hardened valve seals for today's fuel??  Push rods were replaced with new for the 915 heads.

Any advise to produce more HP and retain reliability would be appreciated.  Not looking to produce a racer, just a little hotter than stock for street use.

Thanks in advance ...... CHAPS

Any idea what gear is in the axle?  Auto or 4spd? If it's a 67 440 the 915 heads are stock... One year only heads.... Any idea what pistons are in it?

3.55 Suregrip in the back,   4-speed manual,  pistons are original.   Lower part of the motor has never been touched.

The 915 heads were added ..... originally had 904's.

I think what we should consider here is the basics first:  Everything is based upon the cam choice.  For a good build you really cant cobble stuff of what you have on hand to try top meet the characteristics of the cam

So lets start simple:  You want a mild cam for better top end performance.  So basically you need heads that will meet the cam expectations, as well as the proper carb size.  Exhaust plays part of this as well.  915 heads, may or not meet your cam specs for good breathing  (Since we dont have your cam specs), but I believe 915 heads have smaller valves than what you probably want for your end goal

So take a look at the basics.  Remember everything is based upon your cam choice and should work with each other

915's are available two ways, big valves or small... But even with small valves they are probably equal to big valve 906's because of the closed chamber design..... And adding big valves is easy....  I've got even bigger valves than a set of 906's in mine....
