Driveshaft Ideas
« on: April 18, 2018 - 02:43:44 PM »
As my 73 Cuda is coming together I am getting to a point where I need to decide what to do with the driveshaft. I have the one I took off the car which is a factory one. I was given some advice not long to the effect that I should spend the money and get a new driveshaft. It probably isnt a bad idea, just not sure if I should.

That said, if I do, does anyone have any preferences as to vendors, material, etc? Or perhaps more important, what not to get. I have looked at some steel shafts (~$500) and Aluminum shafts (~$600). I am not all that worried about weight although every little bit helps. The engine will reportedly produce around 500HP and I am running a triangulated 4 link suspension. No plans to drag race the car currently but I would like to auto X it and if the opportunity arises Id like to put it on a road race track at some point.

Right now, my plan is to clean up and use the factory one but I wanted to put it out there and see what others think.

There was a southern site on the 'net that sold used NASCAR stuff and they had big joint (no pun intended) driveshafts for cheap; like $75- 100. there seemed to be a selection of sizes and lengths and you might get lucky. Failing matching lengths, it wouldn't be too pricey to have one cut down and re-balanced. Just my  :2cents:

I have a brand new Strange Engineering driveshaft I'm selling if you'd be interested.

Its their 3" Chrome Moly driveshaft with spicer weld ends and the big 1350 series Spicer U-Joints.  Also has a Strange Engineering heavy duty MOPAR 30 spline transmission yoke.  Its rated for up to 800 HP.

If the length will work for you Ill sell it cheap just to get rid of it.  Length is 44 3/8" center to center of U Joints.

I paid $250 for the driveshaft and $80 for the yoke for a total of $330.  Id sell it for $150 plus shipping.

I am interested but it might be a bit too long, according to what I am seeing, I need 43.85". What was it made for originally? I am running a A833 and a 8.75 rear.

70 Cuda, 440, A833 and 8.75 rear end.  I measured exactly how Strange said to.....it would fit but was just a little too close for my liking.  I ended up ordering one an inch shorter...so the measurement u need is between the two itd probably be ok

You may be right but thinking about this I am going to measure before I make any purchases because I have made a lot of changes to the car not the least of which is a triangulated 4 link which I suspect is going to have a direct impact on drive shaft length. I dont know when I will get a chance to measure it, but I will try and get it done sooner vice later. If you shaft works I will be in contact.

I have an excel file with part numbers and lengths for A, B and E bodies. Not sure how to post it of even if I can but if someone needs/wants it I will need a email address unless someone can explain how to post it.
