Live coil wire
« on: June 12, 2018 - 09:00:37 PM »
Boy guess it has been a while since I was here .This all has to do with getting my car inspected .Front signal light was dim as a bad ground .When moving wire at the light I lost all my lights .The wire to the coil was hot with the key off .Shouldn't that wire go dead when the key is off ? The coil was hot . Car would not turn over . The back up light wasn't working changed switch now that works .Follow the coil wire to the fire wall . Still hot . I tried taking out every fuse wire still hot .Does anyone know where the coil wire is feed from .I thought I was good at wiring but guess not .
Help please car cruise ins are going on and this is what I live for thanks .

No, the coil wire should not be hot, really at any time, warm perhaps due to engine heat but not hot. Sounds like its shorted some place. The coil feeds off the ballast resistor which is connected to the alternator, it is energized from the ignition switch. Its back feeding some how which indicates a short, maybe a bad ballast resistor?  :dunno:

one time the alternator became a big magnet and the drop light was sticking to it ' not doing that now when testing

You definitely got some electrical issues going on. The entire engine (and front end lighting) harness unplugs from the bulk head. If you cannot determine the issue/s, I would recommend removing the engine harness and either replacing it or go through it. You need the wiring diagrams and to be honest, you need all of them as despite what you would think, many times you need to look at several to figure what is doing what. It isnt hard, its tedious and detailed but it certainly can be done. Personally, I would remove the existing engine harness and replace it if it has been altered. Now, if you are running things like a MSD ignition or something, you need to make concessions for that.

The other option is removing or at least uncovering the existing harness and ensuring everything is going where it is supposed to.

From what you have posted, you have power back feeding into your system somehow.

Hey, we have all been there... I am wiring up my cuda and discovered I connected the wire from my ECU that was supposed to go to a relay to my license plate light... Fortunately I figured this out before trying to start it...

I call this "experience learning", it cannot be replicated or obtained any other way than living it.
