What steering wheel puller worked for you?
« on: July 15, 2018 - 06:26:52 PM »
I have now bought 2 pullers and both ended up being to large at the base and to short a set of bolts to pull from outside the can. Who makes a small enough puller to fit into the 1973 crush can, so I can pull it off?

I am not aware that the crush cans were different such that the base bars don't fit.  I have a 70 'Cuda and bought a set from Advance Auto Parts.  The longest bolts did not reach deep enough so I went to Lowe's and bought two longer bolts of the same size and thread for the holes and have added them to my set.

Here's a pic of the 4 inch wide base in the Advance Auto Parts kit, along with the two six inch bolts I bought at Lowe's.

I got that I needed to buy longer bolts. But if the center doesn't seat on the column stud how do you pull it off? The center when I threaded it down was like 2 inches away from the stud. If I have to replace the center stud it's self that seems like a total wast of a kit. I attached an image of the one I am looking for because in the video the guy drops the whole thing inside the can to remove it. No need for longer bolts or anything special. Anyone know where I can find one of these?

You guys are being totally helpful. Sorry if I didn't understand.

Ive used normal puller for years with long bolt, got tired of it and made a Ebody specific puller. 3 pieces of tubing with 3 long bolts.

My can is 4 1/2 inches deep and the center bolt of my puller has a 4 inch reach.  That means that my center bolt on my steering column has to stick out at least one inch for the puller to work. I don't remember the actual length when I pulled it about a year ago.  I'd have to remove the steering wheel and measure it to see what it's actual length is.  In the meantime, if you got a hold of two six inch bolts, you could use a deep well socket between the end of the puller center bolt and your steering column to pull it off. Since the center bolt pushes in to remove the steering can while the outside bolts pull, the socket should work.  I may have done that myself but I don't remember.
