Another Clutch Pedal Problem
« on: September 14, 2019 - 08:14:52 AM »
I put a new clutch in my 70 Cuda when I was putting it back together I think it is a diaphragm clutch. It seemed to work fine for about 500 miles now the pedal wants to only come up about half way and sometimes sticks on the floor. I have the center spring hooked up also. I read on here with the diaphagm clutch u need to remove tht spring. My question is does that solve the problem and do u need to take the clutch ,brake assembly out to remove the spring. I know I should change the clutch but don't want to until winter while the car is stored Also is there a method of checking out the pressure plate I have the org disc and plate I only put a new one in because the car was apart at the time. the platewas one with the 3 fingers the new one looks totally different Thanks for any Help

One way to remove the spring, which needs to be done when using a diaphragm , is while the spring is stretched insert washers between the coils so that when the clutch pedal is released it is still extended and you can be pull it out of the the hooks off.
There is a chance of over revving the engine if you leave the spring on

Remove the splash shield and look up in there, you should be able to determine what you have.

I've done the washer thing, I have always just got under with a screw driver and pried one end off, but this does come with a degree of risk and it is a pretty heavy spring; but it is not that bad. You can also "un-adjust" the cluck rod to remove tension off the pedal, the spring should be a little loose at that point and you can get it out of there.
