Temporary power shut off 71 Cuda
« on: May 30, 2019 - 12:44:28 PM »
Howdy,

1971 Barracuda:

Over the last few months, just every now and then I would turn the ignition switch to start the car, and there would nothing at all from the starter, BUT all power was still on  (Dash, etc).  But after a couple of tries it would finally start, no problem.  I was thinking maybe a ignition switch going bad

The main problem just happened this weekend and just after I drove over a rough patch of dirt road.  All power just shut off and the engine died.  No power anywhere. I looked at the battery connections, no issues, got back in, and it started right up

I am thinking a loose connection somewhere:  Hit me with a list of what to check

Start with the most obvious and work towards the less obvious;

- Battery connections (also check the alternator connections, if they were loose it would not do what you are saying, but since you are checking)
- starter relay connections
- All grounds
- bulk head connections (need to pull them off and inspect the pins)
- steering column harness connector (under the dash, comes out of the steering column)

After these, you are basically left with the ignition switch
