MIG welder opinion
« on: October 16, 2019 - 01:07:03 PM »
Hey fellas....im going to start to take apart my Challenger and work on replacing the trunk pan and other small sections as i find them. After reading about welders....it seems like  MIG welder is the go to way for beginners like myself. I saw this welder on sale here locally for 300 bucks....would this be more than enough for a body panels? Keeping in mind this will be my first go at it when it comes to welding.

I had the same unit and it worked wonderfully.  I strongly suggest you use the gas feature.  I used CO2 instead of Argon mix.  It was a less expensive option. I'll be buying another soon.

That's a good price and a decent welder. Do listen to man about using gas and not flux core and remember that you need to change the stinger polarity if you do. It's easily done and right inside the wire feed section. Happy welding!

Yes, make sure you have the right polarity.  I found out the hard frustrating way.  I couldn't keep a good bead for anything.  Once polarity and gas were in check it was like welding with butter.  I also use a smaller wire .025 or .030.

Thats a good welder, I use the Miller equivalent (with argon) and I have welded a crap ton of stuff, built a number of cars. You just need to understand the limitations and constraints of a 110 welder, great for sheet metal but not so much for heavier metal. You can do it, you just have to properly prep the joint and make several passes. My 110 machine is the work horse of my shop, I do have a 220 MIG and a TIG but the 110 MIG sees the most use by far.
