    Steering Wheel Adapter Issues

    I am a big dude so I wanted to reduce the crunch can in my challenger to give the old gut a little more room. I bought an adapter and restored it. Today I finally got the column finished and put back into the car. Which was no small feet as the studs for the column spin. But back to the point I greased up the adapter and started to install it when I realized it had no teeth. It also doesn't fit on enough to even start the bolt. Pretty sure I got sold a old GM or Ford adapter.  :villagers:

    I just wanted to check with you guys first.  :banghead:

    That looks like an A body can but I am not sure as I do not have one to compare.

    I don't know of any way to actually shorten up an E body steering wheel distance, I think if it were me I would just buy a replacement crush can and cut it, then reweld it. I realize that is not an option for everyone and perhaps someone here has a better option.

    Chrysler made two steering column adapters that looked similar. One was for putting a rimblow or Tuff Wheel on a A-body or B-body early 70’s. The other one was for later 70’s like Cordoba, Magnum, Little Red Express. The later one has a smaller diameter spline which is probably what you have. It will not fit on the E-body column shaft.

    Dales Cuda Shop and Classic Industries has the one you need, new and already painted black.

    Looks like I am screwed. Neither Dales Cuda Shop and Classic Industries have one that fits a Challenger. Which I think is crazy based on the fact someone has to have come up with a solution for a little more gut room in these cars.  :banghead:

    So just to confirm that A AND B Body cars had a different column spline then the E-Body??

    I am sure A bodies did but cannot confirm B bodies. have you thought about just cutting down a crush can? They are just sheet metal spot welded to a base plus the ribs give you great reference points to cut. I would not hesitate from trying that.

    The adapter you have has too small spline. It is for the later models. The adapter you need is at Dales and Classic Industries. I think they just didn’t understand what you were looking for. The A body, B body and E body has the same spline. I’ve had nearly 100 of these original adapters over the last 20 years. Part number 3467186

    Just buy the aluminum powder coated adapter from the Grant Wheel co. And a new steering wheel of smaller diameter. Too close and your knuckles will hit the dash.
