Red Top Batteries
« on: May 25, 2020 - 06:08:39 PM »
I have a Red Top in my 71 Cuda. But for the last couple of years it has been boiling the acid out of 3 cells making a huge mess. Is their a good SEALED red top out their to get?

Red top as in Optima? If you are boiling acid out if it, then the cells are shorted and it is trash. I run some red top and a few yellow tops. That said, you need a good charger, specifically the optima charger. Yes I know it isn't cheap but if you have an optima battery it is worth it.

There are many other sealed batteries out there such as Odyssey, Exide, XS. etc.

No a red top as in reproduction of the old Mopar battery. Don't even get me started on Optima batteries, never been impressed.

Well I did a little checking and I bought the battery from Summing, part #ANP-S27MRL. Description says it is Turbostart brand and says it is a sealed battery. When it definitely is not seals, the caps screw on and each cap has a vent hole in it. I checked to make sure the caps vents are functional and they definitely are, as you can tell by the puddle of battery acid on the floor!

Well first off I have and use probably 7 or 8 Optimas, I have read many comments by many people against them but I have at least one that is probably 13 years old, so I cannot complain.

As to your "turbo start", I am still thinking it has to do with your charger.

Funny this is this all started when I got to a show one day opened the hood and their was acid coming out of one of the caps on the battery. Wasn't from charging or a battery tender, checked to output of the alternator and that seemed fine. So I checked the level in the battery and they were all low so I added distilled water. Well I did some reading last night and these are AGM batteries and listed as sealed but they are not what I would consider sealed. Now I am questioning if I should have added any water to it or if it is suppose to be dry being AGM. I have an e-mail in to Turbostart to see what they say.

Yeah I don't think you are supposed to add anything to a gel battery.
