71 cuda340 triple black
« on: January 21, 2021 - 12:13:44 AM »
Hi, i have the opportunity to buy a triple black 71 cuda 340/auto, the car is a rolling shell, quarter panels and trunk flor is cut off, all the parts is boxed and registered. engine is rebuilt and painted. what i know missing is complete exhaust, new seat covers, headliner, bumpers and to rebuilt the transmission. the body is actually very good, but it had vinyl roof so there is alot of rust around the windshield and rear window.

how rare is this cuda and what is it worth in this condition?

While I wouldn't presume to offer a value, 71 Cudas are, excepting for hemi/6 pack and rag tops, the most desirable E body out there and a 340 version is a damn good place to start. Google it and that'll help you find examples and will hopefully, give you a better idea of value.

I don't know about how rare the car is but not enough to make it desirable at any price. What I mean is that if the car was restored then the triple black might increase the value slightly over another similarly equipped car (then again it might not).

If you are primarily concerned with its value you are in the wrong game. I don't know what they are asking for the car now but it is unlikely that you are going to come out on this as a big winner financially. To get the big money you have to spend the big money and a concours level resto is $60-100K and as a small block car it is probably not going to bring a lot more than $60K (could be wrong of course). Sure you can build the car for less money but that means it will be worth less as well.

So, you have to take the cost of entry (how much it will take the own the car), then apply the cost of the resto, then look at the market honestly.

Or you can just look for a good deal (as good a deal as you can get), build the car of your dreams and be happy and don't worry about the value. I have never built a car thinking about its value upon completion bc I don't sell them usually and if I do, they sell for what they are worth not what i have in them.

Oh and for the record, I never like the 71 which to me is odd that now it is supposed to be so desirable. I get it that its a 1 year only but so is the 70. I guess its that honking grille and fender gills that everyone loves, personally I like the 70 as well as the 72-74 better. Kinda like the shaker deal, I never liked them either, absolute PIA to work on and get that shaker bubble off not to mention all the crap that gets into the engine bay bc the hood seal sucks. Oh well, each to his own.  :cooldancing:

thanks for input. if i buy it im gonna built it the way i want it, going to skip the vinyl roof top and paint the grille black. it will also have billboards.
i do not care about the value when finished, but i want too know the value of how it sits now. i do not want to pay way too much for it and the seller is asking ca 20000$
the restoration process will be over 3-5 years.. i live in norway, europe. these kind of project cars are very popular over here.

by the way, 71 cuda is the coolest car ever  :bigshades:

It would be very hard to access the value without seeing the car and knowing more about it. $20K could be a deal or it could be way over priced. It sounds like a 71 is your dream car, if that is the case then the money isn't as much an issue but the car needs to have good bones; meaning it can't be a huge rust bucket. Yes you can replace much of the outer skin but if the inner structure is bad you are going to have significant issues.

Norway huh... my grandfather immigrated from Norway during WWI. I visited Oslo back around 2010, was very familiar feeling.

I am not hating on the 71.. LOL each to his own and if you love them then you should have one. I completely understand why they are popular, its just that I personally never really got excited by them, but I was a Challenger guy and had a pile of them (still have one).

Before I spent $20k on the car, I'd see if I couldn't get someone to look the car over carefully. What part of Canada is it in and will the seller allow an inspection?

Please list the fender tag details and the broadcast sheet details. That information will also make a difference in the value of the car.

We really need some pictures to help with a price.  The more detailed the better.

Not that many TX9 (Black) 71 Cudas built.
$20k Canadian, what's that in US dollars $16k? Numbers matching Engine and Transmission?
Triple Black 71 Cuda 340... Could be made to be quadruple black... TX9, Black interior, Black vinyl top, Black Billboard... Not a fan of Billboards but Black on Black would be the exception. Black rubber bumpers, Black painted mirrors. Yep, Black happens to be my favorite color on any car.
If it were a 4-speed it would be even better.

If not, numbers matching and even if it is, a G3 Hemi would be tempting. Backed with an 8-speed 8HP70 Auto... Oh, sorry, that's me dreaming...

If building your dream car and it's within your means what's overpaying $4-$5K? It’s not that often you have an opportunity to pick up a 71 Cuda and build it the way you want and if doing it over the course of a few years, you get to spread to cost out too.
Nut and bolt quality restoration plus the cost of admission a few grand won't make that much difference in the grand scheme of things. Maybe 4-5% of the total cost.
Much easier to spend 25k a year vs dropping $75-$100k on a complete car. If doing much of the work yourself, you can save a few bucks and if you enjoy doing it then even better...

Just need to go into it with eyes wide open and know you are paying for what you are getting and getting what you are paying for.

Just my 2¢ fwiw
