440 Hard Crank, No start
« on: April 25, 2023 - 02:09:18 PM »
Hello gents, I'm having an issue with my car that I'm hoping someone can give me some direction on.  My car, '70 Barracuda w/ 440 (512) has been sitting a few months and I'm ready to get it back on the road.  I wasn't good about keeping the battery on a charger over the winter so I wasn't too surprised when I went to start it last week and it would barely crank.  I went ahead and replaced the battery, put the new one on a trickle charger overnight and tried again.  Now, with the new battery the car still barely cranks a few times before it quits all together.  I did replace the original starter last year, upgraded to the new mini starter.  In the past, with a charged battery the starter would crank over the motor just fine.

I'm going to try hooking some cables up to the battery, to rule out the battery as an issue.  I'm also thinking about swapping the starter relay and or the original ignition box, and or starter.

Is there anything else y'all can think of?

Thanks in advanace!!

The only advice I can give is join: e-bodies.org

If you haven't noticed this forum/site is dead, it's a ghost town. Pretty much everyone that used to contribute here have moved there. The following is from there.

Ignition switch?  Ballast resistor?  How old are the battery cables? Had mine flat bedded home once due to the green death inside the positive battery cable. Couldn't see it till I removed some of the insulation?

I agree with Jaybee.

Sounds like your battery cable has corroded inside.
The relay should work or not.  I'm not sure I have seen a relay cause a slow start.
Just my first thoughts.
