Pitman arm not fully on steering box
« on: September 07, 2021 - 04:27:22 PM »
I bought a new steering box with pitman arm and when I put the pitman arm on, the spline is tapered and I can only get it only partially. The arm is not on fully to get the locking washer on with all of the threads of the nut. When I talked to the place where I bought it, they told me that I might not be able to get all of the threads on if I use the locking washer. I can get about 50% of the thread, but it seems like not enough.

I'm thinking about grinding down part of the inside of the pitman arm so I can jam it further on the steering box tapered spline.

Has anyone encountered this? Any thoughts?

Hmmm, it's been a few years since I had mine off and on, but if memory serves, there's a blind spline on the Pitman shaft that you need to engage properly with the arm. If you've got that correctly, I'd mark their positions with a magic marker, knock the arm back off, lubricate both arm and shaft and reinstall. Leave the lock washer off and start the nut and use a big ass impact gun to drive the nut on, pushing the arm up and on as well; then take the nut back off, install the lock washer and reinstall the nut to torque spec and you should be good to go. Don't start grinding on splines; it never ends well, but that's just my  :2cents:

I figured it out. My neighbor is a professional body builder and we got a bigger hammer... Plenty of threads showing now!
