Looking for a 440 to build, is a 440 worth the time and $$ ofr should I find an earlier one.

This info will give you most of what you want to know.......yes a 77 is very worthy of rebuilding........does have a cast crank and in most cases that is fine too.............I think you will find it informative, will seperate fact from fiction..........best of luck

I've got a 77 440 and i'm sticking it in my demon i think they are alright and are worth something to rebuild but a 69-71 would be better...they lowered the compression on the later ones so if your just going to stick it in and run it....you won't be as happy with the later as with an earlier...also if its cheap get it...you can always up the compression.

If youre rebuilding it you can pick your piston size and heads to get the compression you want.

2 similar engines, with only difference being the static compression ratio....    there is ~ 4% difference (loss for lower static ratio) for every full point of compression difference.   


so for instance:

440 combo with 9.2:1  well say for calculation sake for this example,  is 370hp

same 440 with 8.2:1  would be around 354hp



In my case I picked up a '78 440 motor (extra cooling) from a longago wrecked motorhome with 452 heads, that had 13,000 original miles on it.   Practically a new motor on the bottom end.  Fresh paint, Engle Cam Swap, electronic ignition, RB Street dominator intake and then I Took all the right parts off of the 383 that came in my car and for low $  I now have a 440 that looks like it came with the car originally and will run strong for a long time on cheap gas.   I get to keep my Numbers matching 383 block on ice. (My main priority)

Later when I get the urge I can pull it out, stroke the 440 to 500 in short order.  Or someone else can, if I never do it.

Nothing wrong with the later blocks. Just swap out the pistons and you're good to go. The Speedpro 2355 six-pack replacement pistons are a good choice. I've got a '74 block for my future stroker build. The 440 source writeup is enlightening and that's not the first time the "thin wall" late block myth has been dispelled. If you plan on making big hp#'s have the block sonic checked, specificly on the thrust side of the cylinder wall.
