383 Build
« on: July 12, 2005 - 10:55:15 AM »
Hi,

I recently aquired a 383 Bottom End, Pistons/Rods/Crank

it is a 67 Block, So its safe to assume its a steel crank?
Keith Black (KB245) PIstons
Standard Rods

Yes I know the pistons were made for a Chevy, But I didnt build the Bottom end.

I was wondering what type of Modifications I would need to do to get roughly 600+ HP from this engine.
Im in Australia and Im Planning to put the engine Into a '69 Dodge Dart (I know its no Cuda/Challenger) But its hard to find information about this stuff in Australia and I was wondering if CP Could give me some advice.

I do not want to go Turbo/Supercharger as I would like the keep the current parts.
Everything has been Balanced, the Block has ARP Main Studs and the Rods have ARP Rod Bolts.

I plan to Inject the engine, I would like it to be driveable but run 10-11s

Regards

Sorry just been very busy
I had a well built 440 & made approx 525 gross HP , you will need some major parts to get anywhere near 600 with a 383
I reall y need more info on what th eapplication is , what rpm you will run it at , if you will be using alum heads [I assume you will ]& what type , if you plan to use race fuel or pump gas
I would assume a 67 will stil have the original steel crank it was born with but not always

A 600hp 383 is 1.56 hp per CI which is pretty stout. Since you do not want to run any boost, your best bet would be to use nitrous. However, with those KB pistons (Im guessing hyperutetic) it wouldnt be very safe. Also, are the pistons notched for valve clearance? Because without notches you wont be able to run a cam with a high enough lift to net you that 600 hp. You are also going to need one hell of a set of heads and an equally radical cam. Also, you said you wanted it driveable....that isnt going to happen without a power adder and even then, it wouldnt be that streetable. You probably will end up rebuilding the whole thing and having a ton of money in it if you choose to go that route. If it were me, I would find another B-block (preferably a 400) and make a bullit-proof stroker out of it. In the meantime, you can use that block to build a very steetable 383 with 400-450 hp and easily run 12s.

Well i see,

No nitrous or boost is wanted.

The Pistons have been Notched But im thinking of Changing then for a set of Ross Pistons.
Ive been thinking about the stroker. would that help me get closer to the 600HP Mark?
The Car will be a daily driver with regular street runs.

If I stroke this 383 it will be approx 426 correct? So that will be a 426 Short Deck.

Aluminum Heads for Mopar are hard to get in Australia so I was thinking to stick with a pair of heavily ported Cast heads and a Radical cam.
yes it is a Steel Crank. Would 500-550 Be pushing this engine with Driveability?

I have also just bought a 383 out of a 66/67? Charger which has had the bottom end already built to go in the Barracuda so am also interested in where you go with this.  General plan is to work the cast heads and run injection.  I'm no mechanic so the finer points of the build are in the hands of my mechanic (who built the bottom end in the first place) but keen to hear what you guys suggest/come up with.  I guess 383s must be an Aussie thing (comes from only ever having 350/351s available in local cars and 440s being hard to come by and expensive here).

I am going to Build my self a Nice Stroker out of a 400 Block, I am going to go for the 400 -> 500 Stroker from 440Source.com
I just need to find a way to ship the parts from the states to Good 'ol Aussie Country.

Personally, I think it is a better Idea than Regrinding a 40 Year old Crank ;)

I know there are variables, heads, etc. but are you still hoping for 600 HP out of the 400/500 stroker?

there is a lot you can change , porting the heads & manifolds helps a lot , installing 1.81 exhaust valve will help as well , matching a cam is a must , I use Ultradyne for solid cams & Engle for hydraulics mostly , both work well
