Holley Carb fuel leak and electrical prob.
« on: July 24, 2005 - 05:44:39 PM »
Chryco,

I got the Duster started yesterday! However, the event went like this... I rewired my electric fuel pump to a toggle switch and power from the starter relay. Hooked up the battery, flipped the toggle and the fuel pump runs fine. When I turned the key, I got nothing, not even a clicking. I rechecked that the shifter was in N and tried again. Nothing, but on the 3rd try the started activated and it fired up.

I let the engine warm up to operating temp. and check the carb. fuel levels. The rear bowl was low so I started the float adjustment and fuel pissed out from the adjustment nut about 2ft. ont my headers! AWK!
I quickly tightened the nut and screw to no avail. Shut it off and replaced the gasket under the nut. Car failled to start again on first turn of key, but 2nd time worked. Still have fuel leaking from under the adjusting nut. Do I need to pull the fuel bowl off and inspect inside?

Also checked my battery cable connections on the starter and everything is dry and secure.
Any ideas about these two probs.?

Thanks :)

You will need a new gasket under the adjusting nut , usually you can make one with a hole punch & some thin cardboard
the contacts inside the starter relay have probably corroded from sitting so long causing the intermittent starting prob

Chryco,

Just an update....

I pulled the rear fuel bowl completely and changed all the gaskets as well as the adjusting nut gasket.
The float was way too low so I adjusted by eye and reassembled. The car fired up okay and the float level
was just right! I started playing with the idle adjustment screws and now out of the blue, I have a surge
where my rpm's go up and down about 500 rpm. Even after resetting the idle screws back to 1 1/2 turns out. As well, my fuel pressure gauge stopped working.

My questions are, would the surge be carb related or a possible vaccumn leak and would the pressure gauge be related or did it just quit at the wrong time to make me think that?
I'm not sure where to start checking.

Appreciate your help!

PS. I'm still waiting for a master cylinder to come in from Bumper to Bumper.

could be a problem with the power valve
