Help!! Orange peel galore
« on: August 10, 2005 - 10:34:58 PM »
We finally finished up the underhood of my 68 and had a buddy paint it. The body work came out ok but the paint orange peeled pretty bad. He said it was probably because it was pretty hot and somewhat humid (about 88 degrees and 40% humidity).

Anyway I sure wish it didn't have that nasty orange peel look. Does anybody know anyway to easily get it smoothed out?

Thanks, Tracy

lot depends on the paint, some brands will pull a lot of the peel out as it outgasses others when cured in the sun and some not at all. only cure I know of is to wet sand the hell out of it as soon as it is cured, not before or you 3ill have a worse mess than you have now
most times orange peel is caused by too hi air pressure, to wet paint mixture, or shooting the car from to far away from the surface ,

Wet sand and buff or sand smooth and repaint, either way it`s a tough area to work in.

Thanks guys. I have alot of other stuff to keep me busy for the next 3-4 wks. so I guess I'll let it cure good and try buffing. Hopefully that will at least make it look better. I've buffed alot of cars but never tried to take out orange peel. If this weren't such a difficult place to work I'd sand it down and repaint.

I think I'd rather do the whole exterior than under the hood again. So many curves, cracks, and crevices. UGH!!!

You could apply another coat of clear & see if it will level out properly , probbaly a lot easier then trying to buff it all out
