Anybody tried a 15x8.5 with a 275/50?
« on: August 10, 2005 - 10:32:02 PM »
I saw a nice '74 Challenger one day with some 275/50 fatties on the back.  I really think the rims must have been 8.5 or 9 inches wide....and it still fit inside the fender lip!!  It was a very cool look on a slightly lowered car.  It gives the illusion of being a much wider rim/tire compared to a 275/60 + 15x8 combo.  Does anybody know how to make a combo like this work?  What backspacing is needed?

Either would be great!

P.S.  I'm a fan of the deep dish look.

NZ440R/T:  Looks kind of skinny to me....I know those tires are pretty meaty when you get up close, but from farther away they don't look aggressive enough for me (in a street machine sort of way).

8Pack:  I love the way your combo looks!  Seems like you had to go to a lot of trouble to get that look, though.  From what I've read on this forum, one should be able to use a combo like this on a stock rear:

15x8.5, 5"BS with a 295/50/R15.  I think this would be pushing the limits of sidewall clearance on both sides, but I like the looks of limits pushed to their boundaries.  Gotta have the dish...

Don't think that's going to work on a stock E body.

I tried 15x8.5 Centerline Autodrags with 4 7/8 BS and 295/50/15 BFG's T/A Radials with this I had 1/16th's space on Passenger side from leafspring to tire bulge, and 3/16th's on driver side from leaf to bulge, and this was on a 72 Challenger.
I ordered some 7/16th's Mr. Gasket wheel spacers, which brings the clearance around a 1/2 inch.
I'm looking into having some steel spacers made that are just for 4.5 bolt circle.

I also ordered some ARP 3" long wheel studs and open end lug nuts to keep everything together.
I'll have pics as soon as the UPS driver delivers my new tires. ;)
