removing remote mirror assembly?
« on: December 06, 2005 - 07:09:52 PM »
While I have the door apart getting the power window system installed, I decided I would try and improve the operation of the drivers remote mirror. Upon further inspection it looks like it might not be too easy a task to get it out. The cables dont seem to remove from the joystick bracket. Does it come loose from the mirror end?

I had intended to pull the cables and lube them with graphite or something. If removing them is going to be a PITA, I will forego the whole deal and leave it the hell alone.  Can any of you offer any advice here?

I'd say leave it alone.  The other end is no easier to work with.

thats what I was afraid of. I was hoping I could pull it so I could repaint the mirror housing and base. They are that bad huh?  :undercar:

I used a Dremel to get the knob end off. The problem was putting the three cables back on afterwards. They are kind of crimped on now, but after using the Dremel on them, I had a hard time re-crimping them. It just never worked right after that. Maybe you will have better luck.  :dunno:

If I'm remembering mine correctly, there wasn't any problems getting it out.  I'm pretty sure I was able to undo the bezel/retainer on the remote mirror adjuster and feed it all through the door.

I have looked at this a couple of times and it doesnt appear to be serviceable. I lubed the control socket and the mirror socket and it does work better but I would like to get it all apart so I could do a better job of painting it

I hear you Mike.  I am in the same boat with mine right now.  My old '69 Mustang had a remote mirror that I tried to clean up and I broke it.  That is always in the back of my mind right now and why I haven't really agressively tried to dismantel it.
