Any ideas?
« on: October 10, 2005 - 08:40:09 AM »
I went out into the garage on Saturday to move my Mustang out to work on the Barracuda and after doing so, I found what appeared to be the top of one my locking lug nuts on the garage floor.  Sure enough, it turned out to be exactly that!  Besides being a little upset, I need to try to figure out how to get the remaining nut off.  Any ideas?  The nut sits deep into the wheel and there is not a lot of space to get anything over it without scratching the chrome on the wheel.

oddly I had exactly the same thing happen on my truck 3 weeks ago , friggin cheap locknuts ..arrrrg
anyway after trying a number of things the only way I got the wheel off was to take my die grinder with a Ball carbide cutting bit & grind the stud away in the center of the locknut until the cone of the locknut fell off , everything else I tried didn`t work & did damage to the rim

I have heard that Snap on makes a tool for that.

That is what I was afraid of.  Guess it is cheaper to replace a stud than the wheel! :)

Just wanted to let you know I got what was left of my locking lug nut off.  It didn't take long and my wheel is unscathed.  I ended up trying to hammer a 12 point socket on to the remaining portion of the nut and it grabbed a hold just enough to get it loosened.  The sweet thing is that I figured I would be destroying my socket, but it just has a few small burs and is still useable!
