Hello Everyone!
« on: October 19, 2005 - 02:14:52 PM »
Greetings everyone!

I Just bought my first Mopar 3 weeks ago, a 1971 Challenger R/T, Originally a Triple Black car   ;D. Now comes the steep learning curve. Originally a 383 car (original motor came with the car  :)), but now has a 440/4V in it. I got some work and learning to do this winter!!

Welcome,
That's a sweet looking car there. It doesn't look like it needs any TLC. What are your plans with it?

I want to get it as close to original components as possible. No trailor queen, just a nice, stock driver. The car photgraphs well, but it's a older paint job, and the car was 'big tired' for runnin' at the dragstrip, so the rear wheel well flanges are bent up and the sheet metal is very wavy because of it. So, I want to straighten out the body, squirt a new black coat, but the vinyl top back on, put the air back on.........and Cruise! :)

Welcome to the board 71Black!!  Congrats on your recent purchase...looks like you chose very well.  You can ask any car question you may come up with in "Chryco's Tech Sections" of the board.  There are lots of very knowledgeable and skilled folks on this board more than willing to help out.  That's what this place is all about.

Can you post a larger pic of your Challenger?  She's looks great from your avatar.

The car really does look excellent from the pics (thanks for putting them up!).  Do you have all the a/c parts to put back on?

As far as I know I do. I have the compressor, with brackets. It's rusty on the outside, but it isn't frozen up, so I am confident it can be saved. The evaporator has been reconditioned (looks nice), then I have 2 sets of lines and 2 dryers. The 2 things I know I am missing so far is the verticle brackets that hold the evaporator to core support, and, I just learned this one, the bracket that screws to the firewall that retains(holds) one of the lines on. The only thing that is stumping me right now is the belt routing, how many groves the crank pully should have, and I believe I need an idler pulley for the AC belt system. I just got a 1971 service manual, but still havn't found a clear image/description of the belt routing and components. The car currently has a chrome alternator on it, and I know the brackets arn't lined up correctly. Do you think the stack of 7 washers on the top alternator bracket bolt is a giveaway? Another 'gotta' fix on this car is carb setup. I just figured out last night that my carb is a Carter AVS 4401s which is a 1968 383 HP application. The engine is currently a 440, but I am not sure what the date is on the intake (havn't learned Mopar casting date location and deciphering yet). But the carb has a 'stack' of 6 carb gaskets under it..hmmmmm,. let me see, a throttle component is hitting something maybe? ::). So ideally, I would like to find a '71 440 intake and a correct '71 carb. I've seen some in Mopar collectors guide, and they are not outragous in price, so it's financially feasable, but my shopping list is real long, and I have to 'tread' softly' if you know what I mean. My intention is to make this a nice looking, great driving, reliable car. It's a real R/T and all numbers match, my other cars were born as just plain jainers, and hold more setimental value to me than automotive historicalness. All I know is, I am looking forward to having alot of fun with this car! This is my first Mopar, I have alot to learn.......my head is spinning ;D

From what you told us, the car sounds great. It must NOT have been owned by a Mopar guy previously, given the not so nice extra items you found(ha,ha). You have a great car there, but be forwarned, Mopar parts aren't as readily available after-market as Camaro and Mustang parts are. Let us know if we can help in any way.

Thanks for the compliments all! I look forward to working with everyone. I agree, my R/T isn't like my Chevelle (my first car that my dad bought new....in project state AGAIN) parts wise, but I look forward to working with all the great people here and in Mopar land!
