Hi, new here.  Long time Mopar guy that has made due with old power wagons and ramchargers/trail dusters.  I've always lusted after E-bodies ever since I drove a 70 'Cuda back in the early 80s (I was going to buy it from a girl that I went to high school with, bad decision that I didn't).

The other day, I was driving around a rural area near my home, scouting for old cars.  I spied a 70 Road Runner and a 71 Satellite behind a guy's house.  I stopped and knocked on the door.  He was a nice guy and was interested in parting with the cars, but warned that they were pretty far gone.  We took a look and he was right.  Someone could save them but they were both too big of a project for me.  After awhile, when he figured out I was a true long time Mopar freak, he said "follow me".  We went into his garage, and there, under a pile of stuff, was a 73 'Cuda.  Totally stock, with unbored original 340 and original pistol grip four speed.  Car has been sitting in that garage for 15 years and has around 75K on it.  He pulled the heads off the 340 to redo them but never got her running again.  Car is all there and really straight.  My limited look at it revealed no serious rust.  Interior was even pretty decent, except the door panels were sort of flaking on the surface.  No rips in the white vinyl seats, just really dirty.  Car has rally gauges, white interior, white vinyl top, a gold color with longitudinal white stripe.

The fellow was thoughtful about selling it, but had to think about it a bit.  Said if he was to sell it, he would need $3500.  I told him I was interested at that price.  I'll give him some time to think then approach him again.

Only problem is I promised the wife that the next thing we buy will be a camper for the pickup...  Gotta figure out how to pull both off!
I wouldnt give him any time to think about it,Give me his number and if i buy it I'll buy you the camper for the finders fee

If I were you I'd buy it as soon as possible. The 340 is probably worth the asking price. Just my .02

The other thing to think about is maybe while he wasnt entertaining the thought of selling it until you showed up,Loose lips sink ships. All it would take(and people do talk)is for him to tell one of his buddies, cousins or family members in passing"I think I'm gonna sell that Cuda"and your left with Nada!Someone will say I want that car.Or he tells one of them he is selling it for 3500 and he is told how much they are really worth, then your also screwed.Trust me it has happened to me,but i dont let them get away anymore, cash on the spot,I wont even wait for another day to pick it up,i call a tow truck or drive it now so people cant change their minds!Money talks BS walks

I agree with the above....you gotta move fast on these deals and close em out. Go there with the $$, and maybe take soem more than what he's asking...just to sweeten the deal if you have to.

If your sure you want it, buy it right now.  You can always flip it if you change your mind.  I found a steal of a deal in the spring and bought it on the spot.  The guy couldn't be bothered to advertise it or even phone his buddies!  When Ii went to pickup the car the next day, his buddy was there and told me he would have  bought it if he had known it was for sale.

Dweller, I'd have to agree with what everyone else has said.  $3,500.00 is an awesome deal for a numbers-matching '73 340/4 spd 'Cuda for sure!  (I bought my numbers-matching '73 318 Challenger for $1,750 just about three years ago and spent another $900.00 last year to get a 340.)  The difference between my car and the one you found is I'll always have a 340 clone while you'd have a true 340 car.  Just look at the price any original 340 car is bringing on eBay and you'll see you definitely have a sweet deal you'll need to act upon quickly before it gets sold to a close friend or family member.  Trust me, I almost had that same scenerio getting the period correct 340.  I knew the guy through work who had a ton of MoPars, so I asked about any 340's he may have for sale.  As always, he did have two sitting, but he wasn't willing to give up either of them because of just how hard they are to find.  At that point, he didn't know of any 340's for me, so I just played it cool for a while.  One day I went to work and one of my co-workers told me to give Ace a call cause he's sure he had a 340 on line for me.  As it turned out, one of his brother's had a '73 340 he pulled from a '73 E-body back in the '80s due to some damages to the car. (it was a 4 speed 'Cuda or Challenger Rallye.)  I was told I had as much time as I wanted on it because nobody knew about the engine.  Within two weeks of him deciding on selling it, I get another phone call from Ace telling me a bunch of his brother's friends now know about the engine for sale, so I better give him my decision now so I can still get the 340 for sure.  Things went my way and a week later I got the engine.  Ace, our regional manager, delivered it himself and as we're getting it hoisted into our truck he told me he definitely would have taken the engine for himself had he known it was so complete and original. (it was like a fresh pull with everything from the TQ to the original oil pan and all the accessories still attached to it.

So out of that LONG story, you should definitely work out a way to show up with some $$ to let him know you're serious about walking home with a '73 'Cuda to your name. ;)
