Installing E Body fenders.......73 Cuda
« on: October 16, 2005 - 08:40:04 AM »
Advise  needed on fender install.......have all the hardware, steel fenders all painted, inners  as well .....so  all mating 'surfaces' are new paint. Is there  to be a gasket? as such betweeen the fender edge and the inner fender to act as a seal  or   do you bolt up tight   and then use seam sealer on inside of the fender jointas with other panel joints that are welded?...........or do nothing? thoughts?.....opinions what do the 'pros' do...only want to do this once.....I  do plan to undercoat the fenders to avoid star burst in paint as happened to a guy i  know(but it was a Ford)...thx......d.

I would put tape on all the edges to protect them.  I believe they just bolt right up!

I have found that they use a foam or something like it between the fender and the inner fender.
hope this helps.

Any kind of "opencell" foam will retain water, which over time will hold moisture against the fender surface and eventually cause rust. (sad smiley)
Some sort of anti sqeak material should be used though, IMO, just not sure what kind.
Good question, maybe a bead of seam sealer would work?

The factory used a type of sealer/caulking between the fender and inner fender where they bolt together.I used 3M strip caulk that comes in long thin strips.Just lay a bead down on the inner fender between the bolts and tighten down the fender.
