WHats your opinons on 915 heads on a 440?
« on: October 23, 2005 - 08:18:09 AM »
Just getting some ideas for my next 440 build.I have a very nice set of 915 heads off of a 67 440hp along with a few sets of 906's.I have read that 915's scavenge fuel better and run better on pump gas.I know they are about 1 compression point higher than 906's so if i were to use them would probably go with 9-1 pistons, any thoughts???CHryco???
thanks

I far prefer the closed chamber heads , you should be able to run the flat top pistons for better flame travel & you get the benefit of quench can eliminate pinging as well , I would go to 9.8 compression with them

thanks Chyco,I'll check it out,I assume they are probably 9-1??which would make the 915 comp 9.8-1?

yeah + with overbore the compression rises slightly & with the Mopar steel shim gasket compressed to .018 you gain a bit more putting it at approx 9.5 : 1

How much cam lift will that setup allow?  Are those Speed Pro pistons forged?

the lift is somewhat limited as the piston doesn`t have valve reliefs , I would start checking piston to valve clearance around .550 lift

I will probably go with the same cam you recommended for me last time Chryco,an Engle custom grind with 525 lift, that should be ok right?or should i use a different one since this is a 440 and not a 383?I will also probably use hyper pistons

the cam will be fine
DO NOT USE HYPER pistons , they are just a cast piston that is very brittle , if you want to use a cast piston cool just use a cast piston they are less than 1/2 the price of the hyper , or better yet use a forged piston for a couple more $$ & if you want more power later on you will not have the cost of rebuilding the engine yet again

I was told by my engine builder that all pistons are hyper, even the ones marketed as cast, they dont make cast pistons anymore, persay,in the casting process they are dipped in silicone which makes a hyper piston(smooth shiney finish. So those Keith black pistons that are sold as hyper pistons are nothing more than todays current "cast" piston,or Hyper which ever you want to call them. The ones i put in my 383 were "cast pistons"but you could clearly see they were hyper, thats how the discussion came about when my machine shop(been in business 30 years)was building my 383,then the owner told me the story of "cast" vrs "hyper".And considering that even the old cast piston engines lasted 100k or so,today "hyper"should last atleast that long and considering i maybe will put a few thousand miles on my cars a year tops, the engines will probably out live me:)Thanks for the input, correct me if i an wrong.I just dont see the logic paying for forged if i will never wear the engine out in my lifetime,I'll let the next guy the owns them long after I'm gone,if we still have gas, rebuild the engine:)

I guess I have to check into that , I understood that the Hypers pistons have a higher % of silicon mixed into the alum & they charge 3/4 of the cost of fordged where the cast are less that 1/2 the cost of forged

that is true from regular sellers, the last set i got off of epay cost me 120 bucks for a complete set of HYpers(although called "cast".My builder told me some company bought aout another and they were purging overstock since they lost a government contract or it was with GM? cant remember,so the market was flooded with pistons.Thats Cheap!!!!!
