400-450hp small block combos-list `em here.
« on: October 20, 2005 - 06:53:02 AM »
I need some ideas for my rebiuld this winter and so I`d like some proven 400+hp combos running on pump gas.I will most likely be using my current 340 short block but am open to 360 and stroker combos, cost is an issue though. Please list comp. ratio, cam, heads, port work, valve train, intake etc. and estimated or dynoed hp numbers.

Stock, tired, worn out 318 in 1970 Dart.  300 hp shot of nitrous.  Real fast for 6 seconds!  Funny as he11!

I just went through the  same decision process and ended up going with  a 408 (360 stroker) even though I had a 340 block.  I based my  build on some of the Mopar magazine articles over the last few years.  I can get you more specifics if you like.

416 stroker 340(.030 over)
Ross 11.5 to 1 aluminum forged pistons
Eagle H-beams
4" MP cast crank
Edelbrock heads stock
MP 474" cam
Edelbrock Air-Gap
Holley 750HP double pump
TTI Headers(stock 2 1/4" pipes)
9 1/2" PTC converter
3.23 SG
Built by me in my garage.

I imagine this combo is making between 400-450 HP. Altitude-corrected time slips are 12.7 et in a 73 Rallye Challenger.

Remember, this is with a smallish-cam, small exhaust pipes and 3.23's. With this converter it just blows the tires right off. Gobs of torque. Needless to say, I've made believers out of some of my big-block friends. Imagine what it'll do with exhaust, head work and larger cam..............

Torred, I plan on following the build up Steve Dulcich did in Mopar Muscle on a 340 that produced 477 streetable horsepower.  Though I don't have the particular magazine that has every detail needed to mock the build, the best I can do is give you a link to Mopar Muscle...=-/

http://www.moparmusclemagazine.com/newsstand/155_0311_sip/  (I see they produced a magazine with all their build ups.)

I also forgot to mention that my best quarter-mile run was with 14" BFG radial T/A's spinning well past the 150' mark.

The Mopar Muscle build up you mentioned used the following:

Home ported 051 casting late 80's cylinder heads with 2.02's
1:6 ratio rockers from Prob Industries
Edlebrock RPM Air Gap Intake
Demon Carb....carb spacer was eventually used to get the fina 475+++HP
Special Ordered cam from Comp Cam called an "MM Series" Solid (About 243 duration and lift around 570 or So) If you want I can probably find the exact cam numbers..duration / lift for you!!

Made great HP running on 90+++ fuel..

I was just looking through some of the old Mopar mag's I have, and came across where the editors took a 360 and made 630 hp..... If interested, I can get the info.

The magazine articles are very interesting.  However, I think they oversimplify the builds and the work required to get the engines built properly. I'm in the middle of my 408 build right now.  If I had to do it again I would go with a stock 360 or put down the bucks for better components such as a Callies crank and some good rods and pistons, perhaps JE.  No machine shop I spoke with recommended bolting on the Eddys out of the box.  They always recommend cleaning them up and checking the valve job at a min.  Some of the magazine articles say that they bolted them on without even changing the springs for a roller cam.

That said I think my combo should be good for 450 hp if I can believe the magazine dynos.  It's a 408 with 10.5:1 compression, file fit rings, Probe pistons, Eagle rods and crank, Eddy Magnum heads, 1.6 Comp Cams Pro Magnum rockers (Chevy stud mount), Comp Cams XE274 cam, Eddy Performer RPM Magnum intake, TTI headers, carb tba.

Yes, i've heard the same thing about the E-heads, but so far so good for me. If I had mine to do over, I would run W-5 heads, but bang for the buck, the Eddy's are probably the best. Stock they flow a little better than the X-head and ported they can flow close to 300 cfm.

I have been looking at the Indy-Edelbrock heads, they seem nice, but has anyone else checked them out? And if so, what do you all think of them?
