I am an ignoramous...2 similar purple cars FS values?
« on: October 26, 2005 - 06:08:18 PM »
I am such a newbie at this Mopar thing!  Two purple 1970 cars--apparently in very similar condition as far as paint and rust and such, one is a Challenger R/T original 383 that now has a 440 for $23K, vs. a 'Cuda 383 car that has a non-numbers matching 383 for $18K.  The Challenger is worth at least $5K more?  Why?  Neither is # matching.  I thought 'Cudas were more valuable than a Challenger?  Is it the R/T aspect of the Challenger? Is it because the Challenger now has a 440?  It's hard to value these cars to know how to "comparison shop" when it seems like all cars are comparing apples to oranges to bananas.

without knowing a little bit more on the cars it is hard to say. The price already seams a little high but for me the Challenger would always be a more desired car. Does it have something to do with the R/T factor? Sure. Something to do with the 440? Sure. But for me the Challenger will always be worth more than it's cousin.

I think both car can hold their own respectively.  Not too much difference between the two really.

it would depend on the $$ invested into the cars & the overall condition as well as original options , possibly the Chall owner spent more to get basically the same thing or possibly he is being more optomistic about what some one will pay for it
I would buy the one that seems to have the best value or the one that simply appeals to you more

R/T  vs standard Challenger    is  very similar to 'Cuda vs Barracuda or Formula S vs Barracuda.
Like Chrycho said, maybe there is more invested - by this owner- into the Challenger.
Maybe Challenger guy needs more money to pay off a loan ?
Maybe Cuda guy needs this car to sell this month ?

Why does the same loaf of bread cost a different amount at 2 different grocery stores ??
74 'Cuda + 73 Charger Rally + $$ + assembly= Noble M400
 03 Ram Hemi 4x4
 78 Aspen Super Coupe

Just because they're asking those prices doesn't mean thats what they are worth! A better indicator is to check what cars in a given condition have been selling for not what their asking price is.

Personal preference also comes into play, they are 2 such different cars I don't know how they can be compared anyway. Each model has their following and quite often you 'll find that people go ga-ga over one and won't look twice at the other.

Just my 2cents.

In order to make an assessment you would need to know more about each car.  First, are both original purple cars?  Second, is the 'Cuda really a Cuda or barracuda gran coupe with Cuda badging and added options?  What about the tranny's both auto's or is one a four speed?  What about other options, can you get the information from the data plates, there are so many possibilities here with options that can make one more valuable than the other?  Finally what everyone else has been saying...what work has been done to the cars already, what has been done to the motor, body, etc...

Basically you need a lot more information about both cars to assess each cars relative value and their comparitive value.

These are both private sales by individuals and we cannot ascertain the condition of either to make a fair judgement. however, one truth is universal in that with muscle, antique, collector, etc cars (not current domicile vehicles) a seller can ask anything with little or no basis as to value. Most try to follow current market trends, but with high dollar cars, one sale can move the remaining cars in that lot up $10,000 or more. Two years ago no hemi E body rag was anywhere near $1 million. Now look - a couple of bumps and away we go.
But back to your case. Ignore the asking price for each. Do your homeowrk with vehicle condition and options and damage/replaced/variation from fender tag or build sheet and then do the considering.
