71 barracuda track car
« on: October 25, 2005 - 03:23:24 PM »
As I mentioned in an earlier post there is a 71 barracuda that I can pick up for 500 dollars.  It is pretty much a basket case, but I think it would be a good base for a track car.  Anyway the car has been parted out somewhat so the entire dash is missing.  So also the vin is missing.  What can be done about that?  Can you get a new vin tag because I imagine the vin is still on the rad support.  Also do track only cars need a vin or need to be insured.  Any info would be appreciated.

WOW  $500 bucks??  Very cool!!  I think it varies from state to state in the US so I would call the SEC of STATE and get the details.

If it`s a track only car you shouldn`t need a vin,you only need the vin to register it for the street.

I agree with Torred. Is the car able to be turned into a road legal car again? Or is it too far gone?

Take a look in the previous post 71 barracuda available to me.  The car could definately be restored, but it would take ALOT of work and of course it has no grill.  I would restore it if it was a Cuda or even a more complete car, but it is missing a bunch or things like the grill, bumpers, rear panels, entire dash assembly with the harness.  I kind of want a track car because I want to go fast lol, but racing on the street isnt for me.  Also I do not want to cut up a car that is complete or in decent shape because that would be a shame even if it wasnt an E body.  I would put a fiberglass front end on it, cage, racing buckets, aluminum dash and a painless wiring kit.  Any way it seems like good base for a track car and not many people have 71 cuda track cars so I think it would be unique.

A race only car does not need a VIN (assuming you intend to trailer it to and from the track and never intend to drive it on the streets).  I don't know of any insurance companies that would insure a car that does not have a valid state registration (how could you prove to them that the vehicle that was wrecked was the same as the one you have insured?).  As far as insuring a race car, I believe that would be more of a personal preference, I don't beleive tracks require a vehicle to be insured for you to race it..just pass their tech inspection and any driver qualifications if you are running low ET's.

Once other thing you may want to consider though is that a 71 Barracuda that has a solid frame and structure may have a lot more value to someone who is looking to do a re-body than it will to you as a drag car.  I am strong opponent of rebodies that are passed off as original cars, I think it is one of the biggest travesties that have infected classic cars especially the e-body world but, if someone has an CUDA that has been wrecked or the frame rails are beyond repair I can see transferring good parts to another body as long as it is ackowledged as a re-body.

Hmmm...seeing that it's a basket case, you can get it for $500, and you want a track car to bigin with (Don't you?)  This sounds like a fun project.

Do you have any pictures?

No VIN, I think Sal Chicon on this forum had a similar issue, for a '71 'Cuda.  Do you really think it's not worth salvaging?  Can you get the state to reissue a VIN if you can save this car?

L and P Enterprise is working on a 71 grille that should be available within the next year. More than likely, it will not have all of the pieces but we can always hope. I wouldn't pass on this car. In some states it can be rebodied without a lot of hassle, so it will always have value, especially as a drag car or road course car. Go get it.

I'd get it as a track car, but I'd make sure not to do anything that can't be undone pretty easily, you can always remove fiberglass or cut out a roll cage, I just wouldn't add the bars that go through the firewall if possible, and don't tub it.
Then I'd keep going to swap meets and looking online for deals on restore parts while having fun drag racing it.
who knows someday you might find yourself looking at a very complete 71 barracuda.
 Good luck with it.

Yea that would be the plan.  I might just get the car and put it away.  Either way 500 dollars I cant go wrong.
