Wiper arm parking
« on: June 24, 2005 - 04:22:19 PM »
I'm relatively new to this site but boy am I impressed with the number of responses to any given question. And if a guy takes the time I bet he can find the answers to most of his questions just by reading past postings. So here goes. I have a 74 challenger and the wipers to not move to their 'park' position when they are turned off. They simply drop to the home position. Should the motor reverse until they are hidden down below the hood slightly? As they are now they sit a few inches up the windshield, very tacky looking and irritating. I read somewhere here about a switch or a set of contacts in the wiper motor that opens up after the wipers are 'parked'. Can someone enlighten me?
Thanks in advance.

the wiper motor should park, IE...store below the hood. Most likely you have a park switch problem with the wiper motor. I have seen a bad ground on the motor also do this, make sure the ground strap for the wiper motor is in place and making good connection. You can take the wiper motor apart and try to clean the park switch contacts..or just get a rebuilt and detailed wiper motor. check all the connections at the wiper motor plate too.

Good luck!

OK, so I removed the wiper motor and took the round cover off of the stator/motor portion. But I don't see how to get to the rest of the assembly to check the park contacts. The two remaining halves that looks like it houses the gear head and contacts are held together with metal rivets. And to remove the rivets I would have to drill them out. Am I going about this all wrong or do I indeed need to remove the rivets?

Go over to Moparts.com and try the archives for your wiper motor troubleshooting. Or ask Jules the Wiperman to assist. He helped me through the same problem. I would not recommend you go any deeper until you talk to Jules.
