Also discovered  tonite that the instrument lights don't work. fuse is good. I'm wonderin if it could be that dimmer switch. It doesn't turn on he dome light either.

Yep, when mine did that it was the dimmer switch. Did you check the light bulbs for the gauges? When I first got my 72 almost every light bulb in the car was burned out, and it had a bad dimmer switch. The hard part is trying to find a new switch. I finally picked up a good used one at a swap meet, now my light switch gets moody when it's really cold out and doesn't want to come on and those are just as hard to find.

 Since you are new to Challengers you do know that the gauges are not back lit?, they just have lights under the dash that act as spot lights on them. When I got my first Challenger I was like WTF??? And I still don't like this setup!  It's pretty bad when my ashtray has better lighting than my gauges LOL
Also, are there any members near the San Francisco Bay Area?
Yep I'm in Concord, I was in San Francisco today at the Autoshow with my Son and Father in-Law.

So what you're saying is the flat metal bar light strip I removed from above the gauges houses all of the gauge lights?

One Blue lite above the headlite switch works (automatically comes on for a short time with door switch then shuts off) but it is not affected by the dimmer...so it could be just the bulbs? The others don't light and could not see how to remove the bulbs to check them....do they twist out?

Yea, that's all the lighting you get! LOL
 Just drop the light bar and you should be able to get them out. But I'd replace all the lightbars bulbs since it's out and use a test light on the sockets to see if your getting power, just remember to ground the lightbar to the dash or the lights won't work. While your at it maybe clean off some paint at the connection points of where the lightbar screws into the dash. Also using the test light you can trace the wires to make sure there all connected and have power to them when on. You could also try cleaning up the dimmer switch connections.

You live in Concord too?? How long have you had your car? I swear I saw your car pulling into the Safeway parking lot on Treat and Clayton Road at the beginning of summer. If that was you then you saw me, I was in the Black 72 Challenger in dire need of a new paint job going the opposite way LOL

just got the car a couple of weeks ago so it wasn't me. I'm in Walnut Crick.
Thanks for the good info. Do the bulbs twist out. It just didn't look obvious to me, but the lighting was bad.
If you wouldn't mind sending me your email (mine's listed) in case i need to ask you a question, that'd be great. Don't worry, I'm ok...wife , 2 kids, 2 dogs, mortgage, etc. etc.  :o)

 If you look at your lightbar you'll see metal tubes that your lights go into, at the end of these tubes is a black plastic thing that looks like a hat, this is the part that comes out, not the metal tubes. These usually pop out, but mine needed some wiggling. You may be able to remove the light bulbs without removing the lightbar, but I couldn't on my car, the wires were too short to get the bulbs all the way out, and I didn't want to tug on any wires, so it was just easier to remove the lightbar.

the dimmer switch is notorious for being flaky..  also the running light/headlight on off switch can be troublesome.  ours went out sometimes unexpectedly till we figured it out.   Beautiful car you have there!
