I have some questions as to feasibility: don't laugh
« on: November 03, 2005 - 08:27:24 PM »
We have a 1974 challenger, re-painted in orange, with a swapped in 360 engine

However, me being the creature of luxury that i am, i had a few questions as to furrther restoration of thisd car

Here was my idea, these may sound crazy, but please tell me if I am COMPLETELY nuts.

#1 get different door panels for the interior, i hate the existing ones.

#2 modernize the interior, as in keep the same look, but try and get the parts re-made for the car, and new gauges, so that it looks identical to the original in terms of looks, but it is all current tech inside.

#3 Modernize the suspension I may or may not do this, it depends on how i feel after I've driven the car. but i was thinking of replacing some of the suspension parts with more recent ones (shocks, leaves etc...) to make it handle a bit better

#4 replace the power steering unit- i don't know, there is just too much play in the existing one for my tastes.

#5 trunk fuel cell -10 gallons is not enough for this thirsty beast, so i thought I'd double up on my fuel capacity

#6 Install a new HVAC system -the existing one's blower is toast, and the controls are a bit dysfunctional

#7 fix the low hanging roof cloth -part of the interior roof covering hangs down and droops a bit, this probably only requires A couple screws to fix, but still.

#8 replace the brakes with newer, 4-wheel disks

#9, POSSIBLY swap in a 440 or a Hemi engine, not sure yet if i will, or which one, that requires more research, although for now, the 360 treats me well

Let me just say that i am on my backup keyboard, so there are alot of typos, i realise, i hate this keyboard

and if you view some of these things as sacrilege, I'm sorry, but winters coming, and my speedometer has an accuracy of +/-- 20mph

I would first say it's your car do what you want. than I would say that I'm a traditional guy when it comes to these cars and believe that they should stay as original as can be.
Why did you want this car?
What motivated you to buy it?
Updating the system brakes, fuel and such I understand but to change the way the interior looks and feels makes no sense to me since this is one of the things I love about the car.
To me it would be like painting a beard on the Mona Lisa because I like facial hair. You destroy the beauty that there is.
Just my 2 cents

HEy how's it going Sukhoi??  Good I hope!!  lol

Well OK here's my 2 cents . . .

#1 . . . you could get another panel but to try to find one that would fit as well as the current one will be a challenge in itself and probably too much trouble and time consumed with that task.

#2 There are companies out there doing that type of stuff and many things are available with current tech inside.  You can send your cluster out and have it brought up to date.  And we have members here that have already replaced there guages with custom sets.

#3  This one I believe is a good idea and I have seen some pretty good examples on this board.

#4  Sounds like you need your gearbox rebuilt or replace it with a better ratio gear.  I have seen them available (ad in Mopar Muscle)

#5  I'd probably pass on this one, but an interesting idea.   I just keep stopping at the nearest fuel station.

#6  I guess if you have the money go for it.  But I would probably just replace the blower and fix the linkage.  You see those available on e-pay every now and then.

#7  Yep fix that!

#8  Another good idea if you cash is available and/or if you have drum brakes around.  Definitely need to be able to stop when needed!

#9  The big cubes is always fun but definitly a new world with the current gas prices.  I was considering a hemi swap for the hardtop but am definitely rethinking my plans . . . but again if the cash is available, go for it!!

Hope this helps!

the original suspension works very well , you can upgrade the bushings & weld the K frame & LCA to increase the strength & decrease deflection
Look into a Firm Feel steeringbox , it will make a big difference ,

Some great responses-

And i understand about not wanting to change the interior, and i don't want to really CHANGE it, but i just do not like the fake wood on the door panels.

And the reasons i got the car are probably the most dominant reasons on the forum

I love the styling of the car's body
and
I love the way that muscle cars drive and sound, the whole experience is hardly replicated by any modern vehicles

Sounds like you want to do what I am. : )
There are a few exceptions.  Interior wise, I am only changing the front seats and will have the rear custom made to match the fronts.  My gauges are all new Autometer gauges.
Don't forget that it is your car.  I am sure you will have people gripe about what you are doing, but it is only yourself you need to please.  The way I see it, is that most, if not all of what you want to do can be undone.
In my case, I didn't have much as far as original parts except that I have the numbers matching tranny and engine.  I am putting those in storage.  So for someone to put my car back to original, it should be a little easier for someone to do than it would have been for me.
Be fore warned!  What you would like to do will get expensive quick!  : )  Good luck!
