The original Barry Newman Vanishing Point car had a 440ci in most of the scenes you can pause it and zoom in on the hood emblems they read "440 Magnum". They used 3 440 Magnum 4-Speeds and one 383ci Torqueflite during the making, no HEMI's.

The remake used a HEMI and the only time you see the engine it is infact in a Charger bay just trick photography.
They actually used a 440 cubic inch for filming though with many engines being used for incar shots, 140mph shots, chase cars etc.

To inform you that the 2nd verison of Vanishing point did not use a Hemi motor or 440 on incar shots-Charles Carner ( movie Producer) used his 383 Challenger 4speed car which I know own- Viggo learn to drive a 4speed in the car I own and all the interior shots ( pics) were done in my Challenger
