340 Cam suggestions
« on: December 10, 2005 - 06:19:27 PM »
I had my 340 rebuilt about 3 years ago.  I'm thinking having a cam swap done and wanted some opinions.  I would like a cam that can wake up my motor (more HP) as well as has a good lope/or rough idle (something that makes the car sound mean).  What I don't want to do is have to change the valve train (i.e. roller rockers).  So here is my current setup:

Car:
70 Cuda, 4 speed, 3.23 (planning switching to 3.55 or 3.73 but not for awhile), vacuum brakes

Motor:
1973 340 short block that has been bored 0.030 over, it has KB hyper pistons in it
The heads are the 1969 X heads, but I'm not sure if they have been milled, I don't think they have
The intake is a stock 1973 340 intake
Carb is an Eddy 600cfm with a 1" four hole spacer
The cam is a Comp Cams HE268H (not the XE) the specs are lift i=.45/e=.454 and duration is i=218/e=218, and lobe sep is 110.

Any suggestions would be greatly apprieciated.

You mean the 268H. Well, without changing springs, your choice is limited to what that spring can handle in terms of lift. In looking at the Comp Cams catolog, the spring 901-16 can be used with the following cams. (And a set of gears you intend.)
The Magnum series 280H (2500 - 6000 rpm)
& the solid grind, 270S (1800 - 5800 rpm)
The Extreme XE268H (1600 - 5800 rpm)

I would go with the Extreme cam since you said nothing about the heads being ported, this cam works well with unported heads.
A cams centerline is what makes the engine have a choppy idle. The lower the number, the more chop.

Theres nothing to chamging valve springs on a engine. Just need a little compresed air. Or a shop?

the 474 mopar cam should work well too , no extreme lift & more duraton to give more sound without killing the idle & bottom end power

Guys thanks for the suggestions.   Chryco, I looked at the specs on the Mopar 474 and liked them.  Have you ever run that cam in a 340? Also do you think the Eddy 600 is too small for that cam.  If so, what carb would you recommend for that cam?
