Painless proposition
« on: November 08, 2005 - 05:13:54 PM »
A few weeks back, I responded to an inquiry on the Painless wiring website. They were looking for an E-body test car to fit their new bumper-to-bumper wire loom. I sent them pics of my car and a summary of my progress. Since I am local to them they now want to proceed. Whats in it for me? All new wiring including fuse box. In return I install their system and submit pics and feedback to help better the product before it goes on the market.

The car is running now and was in the process of re-assembly. My wiring isnt that bad but it is 30 year+ old. What do you think? Should I go for it?

I would see what the contract says if they have one. Check the fine print. You don't want them getting your car for months on end or causeing other problems.  If it all looks good go for it.

I would certainly go for it... but I would like some gaurantee in case something doesn't work after they make their mods. Heck, new wiring beats 30+ year old any day.

yes, I know what you mean regarding fine print. If I understand it correctly they want me to do the work and confirm lengths, break-outs colors, and nail down any installation issues they can fix before tooling up for the retail product.

We haven't discussed time frame but if I decide to do it I will certainly make sure my obligations and committments are clearly defined. As far as value goes, I think the retail price on the kit is around $300 or so. My labor costs would be at least that much. I would assume this would help the resale value on the car so I'll probably go for it.

time frame would be my concern , your car could be down for a long time if things do not go smoothly  but you can always order the  YO harness to get your car back on the road if your is that badnow & needs to be replaced anyway

I would do it!  But that is only because I would love to hear what you think of it.

We discussed in more detail and the protoype they are wanting to test is a basic 12 circuit design. It won't contain provisions for "luxury" components such as power lock, power windows, glove compartment light, trunk light, power trunk release, ect. As some of you know I am adding PW, upgraded AC, rear defroster, power trunk release, etc and the harness they are offering isnt scalable for those add-on features. They plan to have an 18 circuit generic kit availalbe at some point but may be a year or more away as the 12circuit sytem must be tested first.

I am going to pass on this but if any of you have interest, I can forward you some contact info.

They have a 18 circuit muscle car harness that is out.  I have it but I am not to the point of installing it.  It looks pretty simple but you do have to cut all the wires to length and add the correct connectors.  It will be a time consuming install, but with everything grouped and labled on the wires it should make it easy.

They are still looking for an Ebody test car. This would be a great opportunity to upgrade your wiring system in your car. If anyone is interested in helping them with this project they should contact Eric at ecowden@painlessperformance.com
