Cudabuyer,

I have to go with the 440-6 in the Bang-4-Bucks catagory.  440-6 seems to have better street manners.  The Hemi wins in the Shock & Awe catagory, but the 440-6 is a close second.  If build costs and gas prices are high on the list, the 340-6 will make really good power at a decent cost, just doesn't have the Grunt of a big block.

As for me, I'm building a 440-6.  Would I build a Hemi ?  Hale Yeah !  Can I afford to ?  Well.......................

My free 2 cents worth,

It depends what your budget is like, if your tight on funds, why not stroke that 340??, and toss on some nice flowing heads. Guys have been getting ALOT of HP out of those 340 and 360 strokers. And this way you don't have to buy all that other stuff to switch over to a big block, and you can still use your 6 pac intake. I saw an injection setup for the 6 pac manifolds that looked pretty sick, just another thought.

Do the 440 and save some money. Here's my 446 with ported aluminum heads that makes more power than the 472 crate hemi and cost 6.5k to build. Runs on 93 unleaded and made 535hp/540tq. Nothing fancy, steel crank, reworked stock rods and speedpro 6-pack pistons.

Thats what I'm talkin' bout!!  I want one of those for the hardtop??  Need to make a decision very soon and start working toward it!  This thread has definitely helped!

firefghter, i love the 446 and alum heads and the price is compat with budget can u give me more specifics and who built your engine

Joel Biloxi, MS

Hi Joel, the engine is a basic rebuild shortblock with a few goodies. The holes were bored and honed with a plate. The rings are "file to fit" speedpro plasma moly. Pistons are your basic 2355 speedpro 6-pack replacements. Stock rods reconditioned with arp rod and mainbolts. The rotating assembly was static and dynamic balanced....it rpm's like a smallblock ! High volume oil pump and hemi 6qt pan (7 with filter). The block was squared up and decked to achieve a zero deck piston height....the pistons sit flush at the deck. This is important so that the engine has a tight quench factor. Static compression is 10.5:1 with the 84cc aluminum E-heads.

The cam is a custom ground Comp solid....it's big and nasty. Idle is similar to the old 509 hydraulic. The rockers are Harland Sharp 1.5's and the total lift is .580 with this combination. The E-heads are stage 1 ported and flow just under 300cfm at .600 lift. The porting helped with low and mid lift flow substantially. The headwork and cam were done at Porter Racing in upstate Vt. He also dynoed the engine. The intake is a box stock Holley street dominator with a 1in open spacer and an 830 cfm double pumper with a proform main body. Headers are 17/8in primary tube hookers. It made best power with 35* total timing and all tests were done using 93 octane pump gas.

This will be going into my 68 Charger street/strip car that has a 727 with 4200 stall and a 4.10 dana rear end. The car also has an 8pt bar and subframe connectors but will be running the full interior, heater box and power steering. It makes enough power to push the big ole B-body into the mid 11's.....that's if the driver can get his act together, lol !

Here's a scan of the dyno sheet: it made peak torque at 4600 and peak hp at 5900. The torque curve is nice and flat...it's making 500+ ftlbs from 3900 all the way to 5500. Should be a fun street car.

firefighter,

thanx for all the specs - looks like this topic is an extremely interesting dream build for many of us -

I did like the idea of the stroker kit for the 340 right now, changing the heads, cam, adding headers and any other helpful suggestions would be appreciated

Plus the wife (i mean boss may not miss the several extra $$$) with a total engine swap at this time.

Please read and respond

By the way my other classic is a 69 camaro SS / RS convertible with a 383 stroker (chromed out engine) and 4 speed - totally sweet but not a MOPAR -

I like the idea of a stroker small block in your situation, i think it's the most economical way to improve the performance of your car.

A 440 swap is a good choice if you want the big block torque, and like others have said, a 440 is much cheaper to build than a hemi. A well tuned 440-4 or 6 bbl car is more than a mtach for most hemis in street conditions.

That said, there is NOTHING that has the under hood appeal of a dual quad hemi. It's the only engine I will sit in my barn with a beer and just stare at it. The top end charge of the hemis is something that is just wild.....they love to pull hard at the top end of the RPM's, when most 440's are giving it up.

just my .02 as someone who's owned em all

Unless you have 2 nasty hemi cars
