Well, I talked to the guy it was great talking to him. Apparently he still has the original door that came on the car. Here's the rest I got from him in an email.
Hello again. Yup it's my old car. I still have the original
driver's door for the car with the Vin number on it. This story goes back a
long ways. Hope you don't mind the history lesson.
I bought the car in 1992 down in Cheyenne Wyoming for $2500. I had just
graduated high school and was in Cheyenne for school. It had a 73 440 in it
that ran Ok, but it leaked oil and when I got it home here to Moorcroft I
drove it that summer and had the transmission rebuilt. It was an Automatic
with the B&M shifter. It then sat for 2 years while I was gone away at
school and I got married. I moved back to the ranch in 1995 and ended up
trading the car to a guy in Rapid City for a 70 Sublime 4 speed AirGrabber
road runner.
I didn't see that car again until 3 years later I got a call and the guy had
gone through a divorce. While he had it he repainted the car with the
current paint job. He replaced the driver's door. the Bulge hood and other
fenders were on the car when I bought it. Also the fender tag was gone when
I bought the car in 92. He had the 1/4 panels replaced and put the striped
and stuff on it. I bought it back for $5000. That is how I got the
original door back. He repainted the outside but never painted the trunk or
engine comartment. I tried getting ahold of the guy who painted the car and
found out he had passed away so I could never track down a paint code to
match the paint. So I pulled the worn out 440 and rebuilt the 383 HP that
is currently in the car. My dad and I put it together and put it in. I no
sooner got that finished and along came a really nice 70 Purple Roadrunner
with a White interior, that My wife fell in love with. The guy wanted
$13000 for the road runner and I only had about $6500 in the Challenger, so
I traded it to him and got the roadrunner for my wife for around $9000. I
really broke my 6 year old son's heart, he called it his challenger. We
still have the Roadrunner too.
Anyway, This Bob Watkins got the car and put some centerline wheels on
it. He put in a electronic ignition and worked his magic on the motor and
made it run pretty good. He took out the 4 speed pedals and robbed the
rechromed bumpers and new exhaust tips and quite a few other nice parts to
put on a 70 challenger R/T that he was building. I almost bought the car
back then, but I was a little Dissapointed that he swapped out the nice
chrome and door panels etc.. that I decided to hold off buying the car. He
wanted $9500 or something for it. I called him a month or so later and he
had traded it to Randy Smart for some Work on his house.
I met randy a year later and he had pulled the motor and detailed the
engine comp. and trunk and Added the accessories to the motor. He came over
to Moorcroft and gave me pictures of the work he had done. By then we had
another new Baby in the house, and had bought a 70 R/T Challenger and I just
couldn't buy it. I didn't have any trading stock that randy was interested
on so I let it go once again.
I really love that car. It probably is tired of being replaced by 70
Road Runners. I do have pictures of the car from when I bought it and when I
owned it the second time. I would love to have the car back. Would really
like to talk to about it. It's gone up Quite a bit since I owned it, but I
have lots of stories to tell about that car.
Thanks for emailing me back, I always like to catch up on my old cars.
I'm Mopar Poor I have had about 20 of them. I hate getting rid of them, but a
few have slipped through my hands. I always want to buy them back. I think
Mr Watkins made a killing on welling the car to Randy. He usually does, but
that is another Story.
