The shifter is supposed to be real far back on the E-bodies and later B-bodies. The tailshaft is super long to mount the shifter on the back. That avoids the old B-body shifter that is bent in 3 places and is 3 feet long.

It sounds to me that your hump is in the right place for your shifter to be in your face so go out there and shop for a pistol grip,,,  (the one with the really short handle)

nice pic torred

Thanks Guys.  mine looks to be the same as torra red,s only it goe,s 1 crease back from say ? hole for bucket seat, and the hole  for the boot is square.  I looked at a friends the other day, his shifter hole by measurement is 2  1/2 in forward of mine to centre.  my measurement from center of boot hole to centre of seat belt bolt on hump is 24 1/4  ??  Thanks

I have somewhat the same problem, My car was originally an auto and was cut and converted to a 4-speed with a tunnel hump, but i have NO idea if its in the right spot and i need to know before we weld it all the way in (it was only tacked in when i bought the car).  If anyone has any measurements for the tunnel hump from some points that can be distinguished when it is completely taken apart I would be VERY happy!=)
