torque boxes?

i feel kinda stupid askin but what are torque boxes and how do they work?

They are boxes welded in the floorpan in front of where the front eye of the leaf spring mounts. They strengthen this area. There is an article in the new issue of mopar muscle about them, but I haven't read it yet.
