The gas tanks aren't that expensive really, it's just a dirty job changing them, and a little heavy if not completely empty.  Check out this link if you haven't found one.

I had a VW bug gas tanked cleaned up and sealed for less than 90$, better than new.  They used a process similar to an acid bath then pulled out some dents and coated the inside with sealant. Had to wait 24 hours after i got it back before i could fill it up, it had to cure completely.

Found those guys in the phone book.

got the tank off and the inside is completely rusted, the gas i poured out was red. There are several handfuls of loose rusted flakes in the bottom. I'm gonna call a radiator repair shop tommorow to see if they can dip it and seal it. in the mean time in need to oreder a new sending unit.
Thanks

I put in a new gas tank and car wouldn't start after a long drive...It turns out that the locking gas cap wasn't vented. Make sure you get a vented gas cap.

if there is that much rust inside the metal has to be thin , really I would spent the $$ to replace ti over sealing it up

looks like i never gave an update, i bought a new tank and new sending unit and put it on. It was gonna cost just as much to get it dipped and sealed, so i figured i might as well get a new one. turns out the old one was a litte bent up. Now, i'm having problems with the ignition, it keeps cutting out, hopefully just the points or something like that, but that will have to wait till spring cause i dont have anywhere to work on it for the winter.
